25 year loans? This is the antithesis of what tiny homes were invented to avoid!

Just as a point of fact… No, tiny houses aren’t a new thing. People have actually been living in small to tiny structures for most of human history and that includes nomadic people living in mobile structures.

So there’s actually a wide range of reasons why people have lived and continue to choose to live that way…

Besides, there’s the reality check that everyone’s needs can be significant different, as can their situation, and so there’s no one size fits all solutions that’s going to address everybody!

Whether someone is in a situation where they simply can’t afford even the lowest cost Tiny House or someone has either special needs or wants a lifestyle that will require a higher cost tiny house or they are in a situation where they have to choose between paying for the tiny house or paying for the land to put it on first… The fact is there are going to be people who need options that only financing could allow them to achieve.

Tiny Houses and tiny living has many benefits, including making it easier to pay off debts, but it doesn’t change that for a percentage of the population there are barriers to achieving that life and being able to access those benefits…

Like those who are limited to minimum wage paying jobs and still have to live in high cost areas, the fact there are people who have other debts like from college, medical, etc… So some people just need help to get out of their situation and make their way to a better one… The alternative is to leave them trapped, with no way to change their situation…

Choices aren’t always ideal but it’s typically better to have a choice vs none at all…

Yeah I said that backwards – have to proofread better after revising.
This is exactly what tiny homes came into being to avoid!

Tiny houses are not new – the tiny houses on wheels movement IS new. So you’re ‘fact’ is a bit skewed.

THOWs lose value over time, not gain it. To get a 25 year loan for something that won’t be worth much if anything at the end is foolish and is exactly the sort of predatory system that the poor get pushed towards that keep them poor.

THOWs did come into being specifically to avoid things like 25 year loans. Then builders saw a way to make money and started making cookie cutter tiny houses, trying to make them like big houses with all the appliances and slick materials which made them so expensive that again, mortgages have become necessary.

THOWs, at least the ones made by builders, have jumped the shark. All the creativity and adaptability that went into the early ones has been overrun by this fad. There’s still some being made in the original spirit, but mostly what’s shown on this list now are these commercial things. (Anyone else sick of seeing those constant Escape Traveler ads?)

No, the tiny house movement isn’t new either… It’s more a revival as the only thing new is it’s grown to become mainstream instead of a small niche.

People have been improvising and building their own Tiny House on wheels since before the 1920’s and for many different reasons…

Really, you think the people during the great depression didn’t have similar financial reasons to make themselves a mobile home and find work wherever they could find it? Among many other examples over the last century alone… Things like house trucks go back so far they predate the term RV…

But even now the movement was never just about financial freedom… But also a long list of other concerns like environmentalism, sustainability, the realization that most homes are build using a number of toxic chemicals, how the housing system has become corrupt, and even simple things like being able to live how one chooses.

Really, these are ultimately homes and there’s people from all walks of life who need alternatives for a wide range of different reasons…

This is also why the tiny house movement overlaps with other things like those wanting to build natural material homes, nomadic trends like van dwellers, and those looking for new solutions not tried before.

So no, people are just making many different choices and the market is responding to those choices but that’s a good thing because it means more and more resources are becoming available and it’s becoming easier for more and more people to find alternatives that work optimally for them…

Really, fact is most people are getting a Tiny House mortgage free… Over 2/3rds in fact… Which is the opposite of what was happening with traditional big house market where over 2/3rds owe a mortgage and over 7% owe so much that they are causing their property to depreciate and are in constant risk of defaulting…

There’s no comparison when you actually look at the numbers and especially when noting how many more people could realistically consider getting a home if they were actually allowed to have more choices as standard…

Wonder if you could get planning permission to build an original tiny home, thinking of maybe a circular hut from cob with a straw roof or the tiny croft cottages on the Scottish isles or fishing ditto on the west coast of Ireland. Truly small but livable especially if you put in a modern fireplace with chimney plus kitchen appliances (cooker, fridge, sink, washing machine)and used modern insulation in the walls and floor. But THoWs have been around for centuries, think Gypsies and Mongols plus other travelling folk, they had to live in something. Even the US had its covered wagons (something worth making into a more modern THoW surely).

People have done things like AirBNB’s with Sheppard’s Huts, etc.

Only a 2 seat love seat is the living room? Give me a break.
Put the kitchen, bath, closet on 8′ of one end and leave the rest open. studio style.
Make a couch bad or 2, a recliner, desk or whatever you need.
It’s also 2′ too tall and making a flat roof deck instead with solar panel shade.

    Don’t think I’d want a couch bad… let alone two bad couches… oh, wait… silly me, you typo’d. ; )

Can any one tell me what this house would weigh and what kind of truck it would take to pull it . I am located in Ca and Montana and would like to take it with me at times. Thank you

Hi Richard, I know you would need an F250, GMC 2500, Dodge 2500 at a minimum to pull it comfortably. 350/3500 would be even better. As for weight, I’ll have to check on that and get back to you!
