Tegan’s Scottish Cottage Renovation in the Rural Countryside

This post contains affiliate links.

Tegan is a 30-year-old Advanced Nurse Practitioner, but she always had a passion for fashion/textiles. That comes out so clearly in her Scottish Cottage renovation! She and her partner moved in a few years ago, and since they spent all their savings on the rural cottage itself, they’ve been slowly DIY-ing the entire renovation.

Confessions: All white interiors tend to stress me out. I miss the cozy warmth of wood and deep hues. But somehow Tegan managed to make this cottage so home-y and inviting with a light color palette. It belongs in the finest of home/cottage magazines! Enjoy the photo tour and make sure to follow her work on Instagram.

She’s Renovated Her Scottish Cottage in the Country

How warm and inviting is the wood-burning stove?

Tegan built that door herself! She says that’s when she fell in love with power tools.

It covers the hallway to the conservatory (that’s not yet renovated).

Here’s the hallway to the bedroom.

Who doesn’t want a rustic blanket ladder?

Cute kitty on the bed!

Wood features and green plants really make the place shine!

Tegan really hates the tile in their bathroom, but she’s made it lovely!

The plants make all the difference!

Just wait until you see the before picture of the kitchen…

Wow what a transformation!

That Farmhouse sink is just what a cottage needs!

And this makes me miss Scotland! Truly one of the most gorgeous places on Earth.

Highlights:

  • Cottage in rural Scotland
  • Completely DIY-renovated
  • One bedroom
  • One bathroom
  • Farmhouse-style kitchen
  • DIY barn door to conservatory

“Tegan built that door herself! She says that’s when she fell in love with power tools.”

I fell in love with power tools when I realised that (a) my hands & wrists no longer ached during, and especially after, doing renovations.

Plus… the time savings… oh the time savings.

So beautiful! Well done! I would never thought of using wool for curtains but I am in love with the plaid curtains in the hallway. Love how light and bright it is. A good idea when you live somewhere that rains quite a bit. Inspiring!

Yes and I imagine they’d be great for keeping cool air out as well.

Cool air? You mean cold/frigid air… it’s Scotland after all. In summer it’d be ok but winter… bejabbers it’d be cold as.

I lived in Scotland for 8 months. It was never any more frigid than the Northeast in the US, but it was so dark and dreary!

          @ Natalie C. McKee

My grandmother was Scottish, born about 1880ish. I well remember her saying “it gets fearful cold in the winter, fearful cold”

So, unless the climate has dramatically changed… and you were only there for 8 months so you might have fluked it on unseasonaby warm weather, I’ll take her word on it.

Global warming? Haha. We were also in Saint Andrews, which is remarkably temperate compared to the rest of the country.

I was really hoping for a video on this one. What a beautiful home. I can’t get over the before and after pictures of the kitchen. She really did a knockout job.

As I am getting older and planning for the future, I have been watching Tiny House designs for several years. There are lots of great ideas out there but Tegan’s hard work and beautiful design has captured my heart. Her home is so warm and inviting that just sitting at my computer and glancing through the photos excites my imagination. During these stressful and somewhat lonely days we all experience due to CV-19, I find that her design brings me joy. I can almost feel the love which abides there. If she ever gets burnout from her career she may want to consider design. Her home is perfect.

I don’t know where to begin with this house. It’s absolutely stunningly beautiful. The white background with all the stained wood floors, doors, counters, and accents along with so much greenery brings out it’s lovely cottage look. The fabrics couldn’t be more perfect for the setting, and the setting is so serene and cozy. Absolutely beautiful!

    That’s a really lovely home.
I see what she means about the bathroom tiles though; it looks like Stevie Wonder tiled it. The tiles don’t meet squarely at the corners; a real rookie error, and as a ceramic-tiler myself, that would have been the first thing I ripped out of there.
Everything else looks lovely though, and she should be very pleased with the result.

“Tegan really hates the tile in their bathroom, but she’s made it lovely!” Partly because tile is soooo cold. Its just the nature of the beast. I have tile patterned formica in my bathroom and it isn’t cold at all. And the cost is easily about 1/10 the price. Win for me.

What a soothing home. I want to build a fire and curl up with a book. Oh, who am I kidding? I’d fall asleep wrapped in one of those beautiful blankets!

Looks lovely. Did she keep the wood ceiling in the kitchen? (couldn’t see the ceiling in the “after” photo)

I’d hazard a guess that she did. The picture depicts a bright wall but would also show a cast from the ceiling if it was the original colour.
