More Information on Log Cabins

Log cabins and log homes evoke images of cozy retreats nestled amidst nature’s beauty. They have a rich history and unique charm that sets them apart from conventional housing. In this article, we will delve into the differences between log cabins and log homes, their disadvantages, the story behind Log Cabin syrup, the characteristics of these structures, and key considerations when purchasing one.

Log Cabin vs. Log Home

The terms “log cabin” and “log home” are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle distinction between the two. Generally, a log cabin refers to a smaller, rustic dwelling made entirely of logs, traditionally associated with early settlers and pioneers. On the other hand, a log home typically refers to a larger, more modern dwelling constructed using logs as a primary building material. Log homes often feature contemporary amenities and can encompass various architectural styles.

Disadvantages of Log Cabins

While log cabins have their appeal, they also come with some disadvantages. One significant drawback is maintenance. The logs require regular upkeep, such as sealing or staining, to protect against moisture and insects. Additionally, log cabins may have limitations in terms of insulation and energy efficiency compared to conventional homes. Ensuring proper insulation and implementing energy-efficient measures can mitigate this concern.

Characteristics and Unique Features of Log Cabins and Log Homes

Log cabins and log homes possess several defining characteristics. The most notable feature is their construction using stacked logs as the primary building material. This creates a distinctive appearance and a warm, inviting ambiance. The natural beauty of the logs and the craftsmanship involved make each structure unique. Log cabins and log homes can range in size, architectural style, and amenities, catering to a variety of preferences.

Considerations Before Buying a Log House

If you are considering purchasing a log house, it is essential to keep a few key factors in mind. Firstly, consider the maintenance requirements, including regular sealing and staining to preserve the logs’ integrity. Additionally, assess the energy efficiency of the structure and inquire about insulation and heating systems to ensure year-round comfort. It is also vital to research local building codes and regulations, as they may have specific requirements for log homes.

Conclusion

Log cabins and log homes embody a sense of rustic charm and timeless appeal. While log cabins are often associated with smaller, traditional structures, log homes offer a more modern approach to log construction. Understanding the differences, disadvantages, and unique features of these dwellings can help prospective buyers make informed decisions when considering a log house as their dream home.

As most Realtors will tell you, area measurements should include all living area, not just the footprint on the ground (else a very narrow sky scraper could be called a tiny building 🙂 ). And since this house has two fully finished stories, not just a loft, it really is a (52.5 sq m) 565 sq ft house. 😉

But that is still pretty tiny. And it is a very lovely house. I really like how they did the custom open framed wood stairs.

I really like the design on this house. They do a lot better with their 300 sq ft living space than many other tiny houses. It’s a foundation house, so they aren’t limited to 8 ft wide, and they have a lot more design options. The only thing I don’t like are those really big logs for that little house, especially on the porch. It looks almost like a toy. I would have preferred smaller logs.

I was extremely impressed with the use of space. I could easily see a family of four living here no-problem, which I have a hard time imagining in some tiny houses 🙂

So do you have one to fit on a trailer? I do not know where I will end up next. So I move a lot. 8.5 with out permit wide that is.

Russell, I think you can forget about it because of the weight and thickness of walls. I checked that for my own project.
The only way I can see is as a park model.
      Trucks have more loading capability.

Semi are the way to go these days. But as right now I have 5 THOWs . I just like the simple design of these Log cabins. That is kind of my style. Simple, easy to use, easy to move, easy to park. The problem with park models is something you can not move without a permit. I have already draw up the next 2 THOW with double axles trailers.

The exterior walls are real wood but are listed as “log siding” making it lighter than it looks. Flower boxes I would think could be an option if you wanted to have less weight. I’m still looking for a price! Anyone know with or without shipping?

Hmmm good point! Maybe the bathroom could be adjusted.

I’d make the kitchen include the downstairs bathroom and push it further into the current dining/sitting area because it could then easily accommodate a larger convection toaster oven, countertop d/w, etc. I’ve baked bread and cooked ham and turkey breasts in just a regular little toaster oven. Then I’d put a stackable or all in one w/d where the bathroom is. Then have the dining and sitting area as is, but a little bit smaller is ok because it’s all open and the table can be a fold up. Then I’d make the second bedroom the bathroom and if it couldn’t fit a regular tub, I’d get a sitting tub/shower combo since I hate showers, especially when it’s cold, and I’d forget about the sitting area in the bedroom as it’s really unnecessary. The plumbing for the upstairs bathroom is in the same spot as the kitchen sink and w/d downstairs, so it’s still very similarly set up for pipes, etc.!

I love this house!!!!!! The only thing I thought should have been done is more time spent on the kitchen. If you’re going to have a house this nice seems like there would be more cabinets and a full size stove. Otherwise very well done!

Perfect. Just the right amount of space. Not really necessary to nitpick over square feet. It’s still a small home, smaller foot print. Plenty of space for family and guests. I would need an oven and a slightly bigger refrigerator, as I cook. Otherwise…love it!

I am in love. I am always inspired by such quality craftmanship (i.e. Zyl, etc.) My hubby loves log cabins, I think they’re ok. THIS I could live in.
I agree with the washer – dryer and the full size kitchen comments but WOW, it is sheer perfection.
This is, indeed, a doll house. This has been my dream since I was a little girl and I didn’t even know it. Can you just imagine waking up every morning in this home??
Thank you so much for sharing with us!

I really love this little log house…! If only it could work here in Florida, I mean it just would look so out of place here…! If I was living in the north I would try for this one if the price wasn’t so bad… But I’m sure with all it’s detail and woodwork to boot, I wouldn’t be shocked of it’s sticker price…! They really built this tiny log so perfectly, for what I could only love to own…!

I would encourage folks to visit the website. These homes are works of art. They are probably out of most folks’ price range, but are important as preservation of traditional craft. Not to mention that they are just fantastical! They look like a Disney movie come to life!

This is really cute and nicely crafted. One thing to avoid in future: kitchen sink in corner. Really hard to use that. Better to put the microwave in the corner, or other things you don’t have to actively work with. But otherwise, lovely.

Looks like the company no longer exists, but references indicate they used Polish & Slovak Goral Craftsmen style log home designs.

While there are other log/timber frame builders who may be able to replicate the design based on the images and floor plan…
