Student Builds Recycled Pallet Tiny House

This DIY pallet house is a guest post by Priscilla Crighton – share yours!

This is a pallet house built by engineering student, Angus Hughes. The house is located on his family property on the outskirts of Rockhampton and is just about water proof.

There’s no running water but electricity is available courtesy of a durable power cord running from the family shed.

“The size of the pallets dictated the size of the house which is three pallets high, three pallets wide and five pallets long,” Angus said. “The exterior and interior walls are made from pallets while the floor has been created from packing timber which was donated by a local glazing business.”

The second year civil engineering student, who is currently studying at Central Queensland University, recently moved in a few modern conveniences – fridge, TV and barbecue – along with beds and other furniture made by his father, making it the perfect student pad. Please enjoy, learn more and re-share below. Thank you!

Would be lovely to plant in the pallets for a vertical garden. Just need to figure out how to keep the wood from rotting!

when you consider that many places give away pallets for free, this is very cost efficient.

Great some spray foam in the walls and more pallets to do board and batten and it will be winterized.$400 for the foam and lots more work and he has a livable house.

Even if we/ us were to use hemp and all it’s processing qualities as a medium in between the pallets exterior and interior is doable as long as the foundation is strong.

Angus, how did you attach all the pallets together. I like how you built your house. Her in USA there is a lot of pallets available and I would like to build one similar. Can you send me more information. You did a great job thanks for showing us.

I have same question as John. You did a fantastic Job Angus. I like the roominess inside and I do not think it is ugly either. I love how you did the windows and doors. would love to see your rough draft or blue prints and how you put things together. For a student and first time project this is a very good build.

PLEASE! Pretend that it is something that it isn’t. That would be fantastic! Especially since there are so many things available to use on the outside walls. This house could be anything you envision.

I have seen a fantastic pallet house before… Insulation filled inside the pallets, outside walls in ground permanently, and of course covered on the outside- one would not know it is pallets.
