Spacious Tiny House Living in Rich’s Portable Cabins

This post contains affiliate links.

This is a spacious tiny house on wheels by Rich’s Portable Cabins. You know, Rich has built so many tiny homes that I just have to keep showing you the options that are possible for tiny house living… Including the not-so-tiny ones.

It’s important to look at all of these options because I want you to build the home of your dreams that will last you for a long time. One that meets your needs. Anyway, Rich Daniels has been building some really awesome tiny houses that I think you’ll also like and be inspired from. Some are 8′ wide tiny homes on trailers and others are wider and longer than ‘usual’ and are considered ‘Park Model’ homes. Either way, I believe both can be used to simplify and downsize our lives depending on how far you want to downsize. And really what’s best for you and makes you happiest.

This model appears to be 8ft x 24 ft. I wonder about accidental kicking of the wall heater at base of stairs. Nice looking interior. Nice toilet area. Personally. I would like a trifle more space in the living room but love the porch idea. It appears the builder added a roll out screen or awning for outside shade by the patio door. Wonder what the price of this model is with and without the current kitchen line.

That was my thought about the heater. Really pretty, though.

My first thought when I saw the LP heater at the foot of the stairs is “fire hazard.” Should the heater catch fire (God forbid), occupants upstairs would be trapped or have to exit via an upstairs window. Hope folks will forgive me for sounding critical, but while the LP heater is indeed awesome and will keep that place toasty warm, it would have been better situated well away from the staircase or exit door.

On a more positive note, I do like the kitchen … laid out really well and the Avanti stove with sealed burners would be incredible.

It sure makes it a possibility on the heater/ staircase.

Again, I love Rich’s designs. He’s very thoughtful about how he uses available space. While the bathroom doesn’t seem t take up any more space than most under-the-loft baths, it looks like it would allow sufficient elbow space for 2 persons at the same time. the kitchen is quite complete with plenty of counter space even with a stovetop AND a larger refrigerator. The storage area under the stairs will handle a lot of clothing and/or kitchen goods – Bravo for using the space so wisely! I would make only a couple of suggestions – first open up the under stair space more by using double doors; second, pu-leeze add a railing onto the edge of the bed space! LOL

Based on the photos it looks like similar designs where the stairs only go partway up, and the intention is that the last step or two functions as “the floor” for the bedroom. You stand on that last step, and then sit on the bed, and swing your legs up into bed – just like a regular bedroom!

So no crawling into the loft, just go up a few stairs and then sit on the bed. In other words, no railing on the edge of the bed is possible, or necessary.

I love the stairs and the idea of carpeting the entire loft area. This is really well done!

This is probably the best tiny house on wheels I have seen yet. The bathroom is laid out perfectly and has a real flush toilet, the stairs are excellent and are great for folks who may not be able to make it up a ladder. Like the log cabin accents over the loft and the warm wood interior. The whole thing looks cozy and welcoming. The storage under the stairs is a bonus.

I might add that this is giving me more great ideas for the cabin I am building in my back yard that is currently on hold for a few more days while I await a new drill battery and charger to arrive that I ordered online.

Photos are lovely, but floor plans are more helpful in seeing the – excuse the expression, please – big picture of how the spaces relate.

Thanks for showing so many varieties of tiny and small housing.

I love the stairs, loft, and the general layout; but would probably ask for minor changes like opening up the under-stair storage, and ditching the range for a small induction cooktop.

And one of those tubs. 🙂

I’m dreaming up my own design and like this one as a starting point. I’ve pretty much decided that I won’t have a porch on the trailer. It’s simple enough to build a free standing one on site and use the freed-up space for more living area.

THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE TINY HOUSE I’VE VIEWED ON LINE AS OF YET. MUCH PREFER THE STAIRS VERSES A LADDER WHICH OFFERS STORAGE. AND WHERE DOES THE TOILET FLUSH TO-A HOLDING TANK THAT CAN BE CLEARED LIKE AN RV? WHAT ABOUT WATER STORAGE & POWER?IF I COULD ADD SOLAR PANELS & POSSIBLY ONE OF THOSE SINGLE UNIT WASHER/DRYER FOR LAUNDRY THIS ONE WOULD BE PERFECT! HOW CAN I FIND OUT HOW MUCH THIS ONE COSTS?

I think I’m in love!! This is great. I too would like to see a railing between the bed and stairs. I don’t much like to cook so a big kitchen wouldn’t be a “must have” for me. I would like more open living space than a big kitchen. So far this place is the closest to what I would want in my tiny home.

Alex I have a question for you why is it tiny home builders never use slide outs to shoehorn extra square feet into a home? I’v built several homes and I use them wherever they will fit.I watched the new show tiny house nation and couldn’t understand why the hosts didn’t use one for the girls room,it could have dubled her “rooms” floor space at very little cost and in the kitchen it could have provided floor space to sit down where there was none. if anyone else has any input i’d enjoy hearing from you.

    • Joyce
      December 21, 2014, 4:39 pm

I like slide-outs too but only a very few tiny homes have them. I have noticed a few house-trucks using them. Also I like the idea of fold down decks and fold up roofs for shade. Guess the standard use of 2×6 walls filled with insulation reduces interior space is preferred over insets for folding units on the sides. No reason we can’t have fold down deck on the end of trailer.

      • Lynn
        February 5, 2016, 11:15 am

I agree with your points. I would also be interested in slide outs and a fold down deck.

I think this is great especially the stairs. I would move the heating system over under the window to give a little more clearance for the stairs and would make the porch much shorter to give more space in the living area.
in the kitchen I would put a stove top not a full range and would put a convection/microwave above that. on the left side of the sink, I would install a washer/dryer combo. Some changes I know but simple ones without changing to much. I could live in that without any other problems. However I would like to know about the water supply and the holding tanks if any. What about hook-ups at a camp ground?

A wonderful example of the raised-gable loft, making the loft feel more like a room. But that sucker must be a bear to tow. It’s not a portable home, but more like a home that can be moved, if necessary. But some great features for those of with the land who want to park a home indefinitely. I’ve been looking a park models but most are too big for my dream of downsizing from 800 to 200 to 300 sf. on an existing farm. This one looks about right. Off to check Rich’s website.

Just went to his website. His houses are beautiful and well thought out and the lofts are the most spacious-feeling I have seen.

  • Elle

So nicely done! I do like the way the stairs lead to the two small landings. You could really put that space to work if you needed to. They could double as extra sitting space in a pinch or a small, private sitting area for two -or one, without invading your loft-bedroom space. Just throw a few pillows down and you have a private, comfy spot in the ‘mezzanine’, ha.

I agree; the carpeting gives the loft a cozy feel. I really like the way Rich designed the loft. It’s very private but the small opening to the lower level -as well as the open stair well, helps maintain that ‘open’ feel. This is another beautiful example of how (Rich) thinking outside the box reminds us that even for tiny homes design, the sky’s the limit. Beautiful lil’ crib. 🙂

I love the house and the kitchen is great, but I can’t imagine how you could fit any kind of living room furiture in the small left-over space. I too would like to see a basic floor plan along with the photos, to give me some idea of the total space. I like everything about the kitchen and wouldn’t care to give any of it up to the living room, but the house needs a comfortable place to sit and relax. I think the railing is an excellent idea and agree that I would like to see a smaller barrier between the loft and the stairs. Great staircase access to the loft.

    December 21, 2014, 6:56 pm

This is definitely one of the best tiny homes I have seen. I like the kitchen as it is because I love to cook, but I would think one could order theirs with the options they desire. There are different heater options also for a tiny home, and placement could be changed, I’m sure.

To customize, I’d have a Nature’s Head composting toilet rather than a flushing one. I’d also eliminate the sink in the bathroom and have a storage cabinet in it’s place. Furniture can be found that would fit in a small living area that is quite comfortable. I’m partial to a recliner and know there are designs that don’t take up a lot of space. And I’d definitely put a railing between the loft and stairs.

This space looks warm and quite livable, real quality.

I would need a closet in the entry way to hang coats /shoes boots rack.I would also need a closed area for stackable W/D. I would want less area used for the porch to have a entry closet. What is the cost of this model? Can it be customized to have a mini bath tub w/shower?This has been my favorite viewing!

Perfect for my needs. I like more living room too than big kitchen. Love those stairs and loft space. Love the whole thing. I like to have the plan to this one but smaller kitchen and bigger living room too.

  • Mike H
    February 1, 2016, 4:40 pm

All in all, a really nice unit. I especially like the porch, and I think the stairs are done well and would be popular with alot of people. I’ll echo alot of other posters and say that the heater is in kind of a bad spot right at the foot of the stairs, and I can see smacking a toe against. Another thing that I’m not sure I would have done is to have two entryways in such a small area. Doors and especially large sliding doors are terrible for cold air infiltration and think it should really be just one or the other. The living area seems like it could be larger especially considering that it has to share space for dining. Overall, still alot of good approaches here though.

It’s perfect and love the kitchen as healthy raw food and juicing it takes up space so I always need kitchen space over anything else .
I’m always surprised by lofts with no railings , it’s code in most places to have railings on stairs or lofts but people leave them off for “cooler-looking foto shoots ” . My son fell off of a loft bed and thank God he lived and didn’t break his back or neck .
Please put rails on lofts or you might have a sad thing to deal with .

I love it! I’ve been partial to the Minim house style, but I really like the looks of this house.

That said, one or two comments: First, a washer/dryer, either combo or stackable, is a gotta-have for me. Where to put it…I have no idea. Second, that heating unit. I can definitely see the klutzmaster tripping over it. I wonder how well a mini-split would do in a house that size?

I’ve been to his site, and from what I read, Rich builds these homes to order, so the previous commenters could make the changes they want with few or no problems.

Question for anyone with experience. …how do you manage rv type connections for water and sewer in freezing temperatures? For example city water supplied by hose and conventional toilet and grey waste water from a tiny house on wheels or a park model such a Rich’s that has not been permanently placed on a foundation . Thanks so much.

I’ve liked nearly all of Rich’s cabins I’ve seen to date; about the only changes I would make, and they’d be universal, would be to use a mini-split heating/cooling unit as they’re very energy efficient, and are mounted up on the wall, so out of the way of floor space. I would never, ever want a tub in the bathrooms, having always despised tubs, even as a very little child. I’d love to have a really huge porch, but totally screened–probably would have that done once it was settled in at its site–and that would be about it. I like the stairs versus ladders; too old for ladders anymore, and the larger cabins Rich builds offer full-fledged bedrooms on the main floor. There being only me to accommodate, I’d have a one-bedroom cabin with a really decent kitchen, a stacked w/d, a shower-type bathroom, and this woman would be a supremely happy tiny house lover!
