This is the story of Travis and Destoni’s school bus tiny home, online they are known as Sloth High Five (Instagram). Prior to embracing the bus life, they were deep in debt, working like crazy, and feeling like they were not making any forward progress. That’s when they decided to throw away the “rules” that they had been taught.
So they made some bold moves… They sold their home, took the equity and paid off their debt and used what was left over to buy and build out the school bus which cost them approximately $19,000. Now they get to travel quite a lot, and to make money, they simply stop in places they love and take seasonal jobs. This is what they’ve been doing for about a year, and so far, they absolutely love it. Couple Sell House in Florida, Pay Off Debt, And Build A School Bus Conversion For $19k

Before the bus, they lived in a 4/2 house in Florida! They sold it, took the equity, paid off their debt, and built out this school bus. They didn’t even finish it completely before hitting the road.

They’ve been on the road since March of 2019. To make money, they take up resort jobs or any other seasonal jobs in any towns that they like. It’s only their first year on the road, so they are still building everything out and getting used to the lifestyle.

Their school bus conversion even has solar panels so they can have off-grid power. The bus has an X-box for entertainment, pop-up television, records, movies, all the goodies…

They admit that life on the road is still “life”, having its challenges, but ultimately they love traveling so much and the freedom, adventure, and experiences that the lifestyle is offering them.

VIDEO: Couple Sells House To Escape Debt & Builds A School Bus Conversion For $19K
Travis and Destoni owned a home, but felt trapped. They were deeply in debt and working hard feeling like they were just treading water. They decided to throw out all of the rules they had been taught and choose their future. They sold their home, took the equity to pay off their debt and build out the bus, which cost 19K. Now they get to travel full-time. For work, they stop in places they love and work for a season and then move on to the next spot. They’ve been doing it for almost a year and love it.

That is nice. Not to sound stupid but where are there reliable sources for surplus school buses?
That’s not stupid. That’s a very valid question. I’ve often thought the same. I live in New Zealand and finding buses like these are virtually impossible… simply because we really don’t have school buses like you do in the States. Buses here are either intercity double decker monstrosities or city public transport. And the city ones are rapidly being replaced with electric double deckers. And students tend to catch the city buses to get to school, or get dropped off usually by their mothers who drive what are sarcastically called Remuera Tractors.
What’s most important, they continue to enjoy the journey.
