Retired Couple’s Tiny Life on a Catamaran: From Croatia Around the World

Carla and Simon lived busy lives before their paths crossed in 2015. They married in 2017, and by 2018 — a bit on a whim — they sold their home, bought a boat, and decided to spend their days sailing the seven seas! Two years later and they’re still loving their life on the water.

They live full-time on their Lagoon 400, along with an orchid and their adorable cat, Dobby. They even survived a storm off of the Bahamas during COVID-19. Their boat was damaged badly enough that the country generously let them moor there and ride out quarantine, despite the fact the country had already closed their borders to outsiders.

To date, the couple have visited some 40 countries on their journey, and they don’t have plans to stop any time soon. You can follow their travels on Instagram, but make sure to watch the tour of their catamaran below.

Two+ Years at Sea: Retired Couple’s Catamaran Life

Carla loves eating healthy foods, and does lots of cooking on the boat.

Anything not in a cabinet is secured down with sticky tack.

They actually catch quite a bit of fish on their journeys to eat.

They have a spacious bathroom, with a simple flushing electric toilet.

Although they did leave behind winter clothing, they didn’t pare down their summer wardrobes at all.

Carla first proposed the idea of sailing the world, but Simon was quick to agree to the crazy plan.

First let’s understand a 40′ cat is NOT a tiny house. That would be a 26-30′ cat.
Costs on a boat is by it’s length, size so get the smallest well founded cat, tri you can. Or better, build your own as a great way to live. 30′ or less will do for most people.
I loved sailing the islands as the best way to meet the people staying long enough to really get to know a place and visit away from the tourist traps.
I lived this way for 25 yrs and hard to beat for a better low energy/impact/cost life. Now with solar, cell phone, internet even anchored out with A/C would be even better.
Another easy to build fresh water version is a Shanty Boat with many free plans and can be used as a trailer tiny home too say in the winter or trailer it south for winter.
