Recycled Tiny House Built for only $420

This post contains affiliate links.

This is a 67-square-feet recycled tiny house built for only $420.

It’s built on privately owned land where residents are developing their own DIY community.

Residents get to use the land for free in exchange for developing it with other structures, farming, and more. In the future, we believe more vacant land owners will allow this sort of arrangement. What are your thoughts on this community setup? Please enjoy, learn more, and re-share below. Thank you!

Where is this tiny house community located? Do you have any advice on how to find property owners willing to do this type of community development? I live in Los Angeles. Thank you for a great video. (:

And where does a local government/zoning board allow such a development?

I am a land owner & would be very interested in allowing like minded people to build Tiny Homes in exchange for taking care of my property Does anyone know How to check with county to see if this is allowed?

Check with your local or county building and zoning office(s). They will address all building issues. In larger populated areas, there may be additional hurtles to jump, but start with building and zoning. They will let you know any other department you will have to go through. You may be able to get zoning changed in some areas if you have enough like minded people to join you or if you can provide data to your local government that justifies the usage. Don’t for get the tax implications. If they see more revenue, it will help. Talk to the city or county, manager if you have one, he or she may help you.

Going thru a dumpster, looking for food? Sounds like they’re homeless. Well, it looks like a garden shed, but it would beat sleeping on the streets at least.

Thank you for sharing your video. I think you guys are pretty talented to be able to build your own tiny home. You did an awesome job! You have a pretty good set up. You were very lucky to be able to find someone to let you live on their land for free. Actually your not really living for free your taking care of their land. I love the fact you get to set up gardens and farming. Just think you don’t have a mortgage. I wish both of you much happiness in your tiny home!!

If they didn’t have to pull it down the highway, why not add a couple more feet in height? The loft would feel much roomier.

In looking at the proportions, part of me would want to redesign it with the walls pitching out about 5° towards the roof to play with the perspective. If you’re going to build a chicken coop – make it squawk!

Tess hit the nail on the head the BIG obstacle is Zoning! My husband and I have 20 rural acres on a mountain here on the Southern Oregon Coast. We are surrounded on 3 sides by Timber Lands. We have plenty of room to share and 2 empty cabins sitting on the land yet Zoning says only 1 residence/ Family allowed. The small cabins have been used for family guest and sewing room. We have so much wooded land that everyone could have private space. We grow a wonderful Organic Garden and Orchard and would love to have helpers who love gardening logging, milling lumber for small projects to join us. Their Labor in exchange for cabin use, free firewood for heat and plenty garden space, compost toilet and Solar! We are trying to find a proposal that will please this county. Open to any and all suggestions…

Please let me know if it could happen. This is the area of Oregon that I would love to build a tiny home. My brother is a carpenter in Hawaii and said he would help build,
And I want to garden and everything else rural too! Please keep in touch.

hmmm. most cities will allow for exceptions if your argument is compelling enough. i would say go to the planning department and be cordial with the employees and see what the real obstacles are. they are union folks usually and tend to have better ethics than for profit folks?

I love it , been living in my hand built tiny house on wheels($2,000) for 5 yrs. I built on an old travel trailer frame 22′ but want to go smaller now, have 10 acres in desert East of Bend Oregon and would love to share with others but our county is not up for that yet, have to keep working on them, its totally off grid.

my guess is this is somewhere in New Zealand. We are working through the planning stages to build 10 m2 bach on family land (holiday bedroom, effectively a permanent tent) … 10 m2 (outside measurements) does not require building consent as long as no indoor plumbing/kitchen, but on site with an existing dwelling (house with facilities). I’m building a flat (shed) roof loft 2.4 x 4.1 tiny houses with lofts….
