Tiny House Talk Behinds the Scenes Recap: 3-26-2013

Last month I gave you a recap of what has been happening behind the scenes here at Tiny House Talk.

As a reminder, this “behind the scenes” series is where I publicly talk about improvements and changes for our site.

It’s also where you can share your ideas in the comments. What do you wish I’d do more of around here? Or what feature do you wish we had?

Tiny House Events and Workshops I’ll Be At

I’m really excited about a few upcoming tiny house events and workshops that I’m going to get to be a part of. This also includes a Tiny Home Builders workshops I’m co-hosting with Dan Louche.

So here’s where I’ll be in the upcoming months. I hope I get to meet some of you. And I’m really excited to get to meet so many people I’ve been reading about and emailing back and forth with over the years.

Are you going to be attending any of these three events this year? If so, let me know! And be sure to say hello when you see me there. Looking forward to meeting you. Hmm, maybe I should add an events area to this site?

Facebook Comments

You might have noticed the new Facebook comments area under each of our posts now. This is just to make it more convenient to comments if you’re a Facebook user and already logged in once you get to our site. I really think it helps with discussions. But we’ll always keep the other comments area too for those of you who don’t use Facebook.

Our very first Facebook comment experiment was on this post: Nate & Jen’s tiny house on wheels and we have 20 FB comments there and counting. I thought that was cool! And I hope you all enjoy the new feature.

Sidebar Changes: Search, Posts & Banner Ads

You might have noticed the new Top Posts & Pages sidebar links with thumbnails on the right.

I’ve also added a search function at the top and bottom of the sidebar on the right in case you’re ever looking for something in particular.

I’m also experimenting with some different ads in our sidebar. Instead of banner ads I’ll be creating our own ads to promote other posts and pages within Tiny House Talk instead of leading you somewhere else.

If you have any input/suggestions on any of these changes I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments. Thanks.

Coming Soon to Tiny House Talk

I like to close these “behind the scenes” sessions with what I’m currently working on which is what’s coming soon. And as always, I’m open and receptive to your thoughts and suggestions. So please SHARE in the comments!

Anyway, here’s what I’m working on lately:

I absolutely detest having to use Facebook to make comments on things. It becomes public knowledge and can be Googled by anyone, and also part of my FB, which I only use to stay in touch with young relatives, NOT for massive social networking. My opinions written in the “heat of the moment” over controversial news articles years ago are still floating around out there. You’re also inviting ANYone on FB, including the haters and spammers, to join in Tiny House conversations just to be obnoxious or flame others. Please reconsider this, or at least do not take away THIS “Leave a Comment” means of adding to intelligent conversation about the Tiny House movement. I doubt if I’m the only one who thinks FB is sometimes a necessary evil, but certainly not a way of life. Thanks very much.

Thanks for your thoughts Lucy. I hadn’t thought of that but I can definitely see what you mean. I plan on keeping these comments forever so folks can be anonymous.

And if the Facebook comments start to bring out more bad than good I’ll remove them. But so far I think it’s been great. Have a good one Lucy!

Alex, I sincerely hope FB is a good experience for you. Tiny House people are super-nice and remind me of the mindset of my old tie-dye hippie days, whether we were making macrame or building teepees and hobbit houses in unauthorized places. We dreamed of a better, easier world. I’ve enjoyed the blogs and hearing from like-minded “youngsters” such as yourself, it gives me hope for the future. I sometimes feel that my generation failed yours, and left you a Donald Trump grab-and-devastate culture. We should have been the generation to set a standard of responsibility to the earth for future generations, not leave you a mess. Technology has further drastically changed all that in the last forty years, also. I’m a bit protective of the eco-minded Tiny House people :-), hence my FaceBook diatribe. Best wishes.

You’re awesome Lucy, thanks for supporting us and being apart of it!

I hope you’ll be coming back to Alpharetta (or anywhere in the Atlanta area) in a year or two. I won’t be able to attend the upcoming workshop, but I want to!

    • Alex March 27, 2013, 7:13 pm

I hope we do it again too. I think we will. But it’s not for sure yet. Wish you could make it this time, too. Best wishes, Alex

Alex, I am completely sold on the Tiny House as a possible answer to home ownership for someone like myself living on a disability pension. A long term view is the concept, akin to the Phoenix Arizona project, of building a like minded community. will the Tiny House Loans be made available to Canadians?

    • Alex March 28, 2013, 1:48 pm

Thanks Joyce! Me too. Eventually yes (on the loans) but not sure when yet. Will always keep you all updated though. If anyone else wants to get updates on that kind of stuff just go to http://tinyhouseloans.com.

How about something about trailers that the tiny house is built on. What to look for or be careful about.
sizes and weights-how or where to have one custom made.

    • Alex March 30, 2013, 2:40 pm

Fantastic idea Janet that’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while so this is a great reminder for me. Thank you!

    • Jerry March 30, 2013, 11:17 pm

I recently ran across this while researching trailers for my future tiny house, has a lot of good information, and it is written by an engineering firm.

Hi, Alex! I LOVE seeing the interiors of the tiny homes, so thanks for including them a lot. You asked for ideas? Well, I’d love to see some more ‘little’ homes, like 500 square feet maybe? i.e., something a little bigger than the tiny homes. I’d love to see the inside of them too! Just a suggestion! 🙂
