This is the story of how tiny homes made a big impact at the recent Innovative Housing Showcase event in Washington, D.C. which showcased several affordable housing options. And also, how our government may be opening up to legalizing tiny.

Alexis and Christian, of Tiny House Expedition, even got the attention of Ben Carson, head of housing and development for the United States. Mr. Carson mentioned how we are being hampered by regulatory barriers. Again, this is coming from the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)! THAT’S encouraging. Maybe we will see significant forward progress for tiny homes in the very near future. So, wanna see what the event was like? Let’s go…

Together with my wife, Malissa, we built The Tiny Tack House 8 yr. ago and have enjoyed living tiny so much that we want to open up the opportunity for others to “Try on Tiny” before deciding to do it themselves. Welcome to tiny, now enjoy your stay!

This is Steve’s 400 sq. ft. Cabin off Big Twin Lake in Winthrop, Washington that he built as a retirement home.

In order to build just fifty feet from the lakeside, Steve had to build “tiny” and so he has his cabin on a 20 ft. by 20 ft. slab. The self-contained space has a composting toilet and shower in the bathroom, pull down stairs to bed loft with window dormer, and handmade furniture that includes a futon bed.

Steve said it’s built with a log post structure and 6” walls covered with 1” styrofoam and stucco. His kitchen has an apartment size fridge and range and he enjoys a built-in indoor-outdoor sound system including a sub-woofer. Best of all? There’s a dock for relaxing or fishing!

If you have questions for Steve, ask in the comments!

This is the King’s Loft Tiny Home by Tiny Houses of Washington.

The THOW is their first model, built to RV codes with beautiful finishes on the inside. My favorite feature is the focal wall in the living room with a faux fireplace and perfect spot for a TV. The home is currently for sale, so it could be yours!

There are also tons of details (including price) on the last page about the finishes, appliances and more.
