What a fun place to come home to. Like living in a work of art. Too small for me as is, but as a concept to add onto (design around) = Wow!

I don’t know why, but I foresee the Tiny House movement getting hijacked by corporations, who will possible lobby to get ordinances that will only allow certain standards in tiny homes, and the building thereof. When you start to see bodies of building standards oversight orgs being assembled, it’s the beginning of the hijack. I was talking with a modular home manufacturer about this same thing, and corporate home building manufacturers are kinda burnt over the entire Tiny House movement, and this particular manufacturer conveyed Their idea of the tiny house movement, and it was painted in a very “regulated to benefit them” more so. Just throwing that out there.

Avoid all those bureaucracy issues by building as an RV. A home on a trailer exists beyond the bureaucrats! (At least, until they sharpen their Number Two to scribble up some new code or regulation. Remember, only congress-critters can make law…)

The Tiny House Summit that just happened mentioned that it is not a good idea to get certified as an RV since it is illegal most places to live in an RV full-time. They recommended NOAH certification

For a country that is supposed to be based on personal freedom the American government sure tries to control just about every aspect of your life. It makes sense if you think about it, the more they tie you to the grid, the more dependency on their “services” they create, the more taxes they get, and the more the economy “grows”. Money, afterall, is really just debt in disguise. In the county I live in they have specifically outlawed tiny houses in the code, minimum trailer size permissible is 8 x 32. Has to be RIVA certified as well. I have come to the conclusion that freedom is just a word in 2017, and it certainly isn’t something worth fighting for. Retire to Mexico, where your money goes 4 times farther.

I’m not living here; I’m researching the tiny house phenomenon, and possible off grid functionality. Look around and you tell me how it’s going.

The price of popularity. I see plenty of companies commercially building them now. But, there are many folks who build tiny houses themselves because of: 1. Necessity (can’t afford to have it built and need low cost housing). 2. love of doing it for themselves. 3. philosophical position on issues from saving the environment, living small and sustainability, and self reliance. 4. Feelings of being over taxed, over commercialized and costs of living (infrastructure and utilities) being too burdensome and turning our lives into wage slavery. For such people the zoning laws and industry standard laws will always be a moving target to work around.
Don’t let the bastards grind you down! Choose Liberty!

Finally, a handicap accessible tiny home! It’s the first one I’ve seen. Where did you find the wheelchair ramps? They look metal and like they might fold up for portability. Thanks!

    • Becky
      February 2, 2017, 6:25 pm

Other than the ramp I don’t see anything inside that is very accessible for a wheelchair. Everything is too low, especially the bed. Also the counters are low, can’t see how they would transfer from chair to toilet. Might be able to back a chair into the shower, depending on the width of the doorway. My first hubby was a paraplegic. Just sayin’

Discount Ramps is a great place for such ramps; there may be others. (Note–I have no connection whatsoever to this comp other than I purchased from them once.)

The tiny house “movement” is big enough to include everyone/anyone who wants to be part of it. So why waste energy bemoaning the hijacking of the idea? Just take what you want from all the examples and use those ideas to come up with your own original. Don’t worry about what somebody else will do.
With that said, I knew the minute I saw the exterior of this tiny house that it had to be one of Abel Zyl’s creations. His designs always amaze me with their whimsy, creativity, and craftsmanship.

This is great. There were some jerks who said they would complain to the authorities this Tiny house hotel didn’t have wheelchair accessibility. Now they have a unit! This must be the first truly tiny house I have see that is wheelchair friendly. It’s my understanding that the builders of the houses keep ownership and just park their houses there. I guess they split the profits. Its great advertising for the builders too. its a win win win.
The house is absolutely gorgeous! That being said, I think the walls should have been painted white/or some light color. it would make the ceiling, door, floor, counter, trim and stain glass windows really pop.
The white would have been a beautiful contrast against the dark greens, intense blues and the wood patterns on the door and ceiling, but those brown walls are drabbing everything out. The paintings on the walls are horrible, but they would look better against white or light color walls.
The heavy looking dark green curtains also adds to the drabness.
There are also not quite enough windows to make the house bright during the daytime and a lot of the windows are small. so white walls would help brighten the place.

Up north I can see your comments as valid.
However I have lived in the tropics and the desert where the light is so bright your eyes need relief — and what you call “drab” is genuinely restful when you need to get away from the harsh desert or tropical glare.

        November 23, 2017, 1:00 pm

I have never lived in the tropics or the desert, but when I google tropical or desert house interiors, I see white or light coloured walls. and the northern climate look with have all wood cabin walls, the opposite of what you said. I didn’t imply all white walls and ceilings and floors. just wall walls and keep the floor, ceiling and trim its natural colour. While you find all wood soothing, I find all the wood anxiety producing. I find some all wood interiors ok, most of the time all the patterns are too much for me. I find the white walls, even whitewashed wood, more soothing. Its all in how you look at it.

It would be living in beautiful art. I like the wood-colored walls. Some people need more light and “pop” than others. I appreciate the soft quiet nature of this.

Abel, I get more excited over every house you build, although the Little Bird is still my favorite. This is lovely, too. I designed my house for wheelchair access, because I know the time is coming. I’m just more than a little sorry that I didn’t go to you to build my home. Looks like the next best thing is for me to visit Portland again. I’ve stayed at Caravan twice, already. I hope lots of folks get to experience staying in a tiny before buying and/or designing one. Congratulations at finding your true metier.

For all the anti-government extremists and anarchists who think all laws are bad…There is a reason, sometimes many, that these laws come to exist. Handicap people have many varieties of disabilities. These can hinder them in not only their daily lives–but endanger them in emergencies such as fires, etc. If laws did not address their concerns–you can be sure, as history has shown–that the “corporations” simply would not spend a dime addressing their concerns. I count my blessings everyday. It is why they have my wholehearted support.

The progressive liberal Marxist fascist social justice warriors are chomping at the bit for more laws, codes, regulations, opinions. Diversity is talked-up… unless I disagree with their goals, then it’s off to the Re-Education Camp. Or off with my head. Is everybody ready for their form of Sharia ‘law’? It’s coming faster than you realize.

And yet, I feel no more secure knowing you traded my liberty for your illusion of security.

I absolutely love Zyl Vardo houses. I could TOTALLY live in this full-time. My only changes would be white paint in the interior and a railing for the stairs (and some stair railings can be whimsical too, and add to the ambience). Love Zyl Vardos so much!

This is an adorable tiny house, and I can definitely see staying there, or even living there. But $165 a night???? I can book a hotel room at Disney World for less! And what’s there to do in Portland?

Too bad. I’d really like to stay in this house to see what tiny living is like, but not at THAT price!

My brother lives in Portland, so I visit often. That’s definitely a competitive rate for a decent hotel in downtown Portland, and there is lots to do there. Fantastic restaurants and microbreweries, cool shopping, not far from the gorgeous coast, etc. Mind you, the thought of Disney World makes me shudder, so perhaps my idea of a good time differs from yours!

I am in the beginning of my first build (a cedar cabin) (mini-tiny) 12’x7′ and I have a single axle; so I was impressed to see such a large build on a seemingly single axle, because I am concerned about weight.

It is funny, I glanced at this house and thought, ‘yup, gotta be one of Abel Zyl’s creations.’ So talented. He builds beauty & function into each of his works. Very easy to spot his work.
To see the mastery you just need to look at the picture of the stairs. I could look at that for an hour and still not see all the intricacies. Great work again.
