She’s Living Tiny In A Travel Trailer With Her Dogs

When times got tough, Sarah was able to arrange to live tiny in a travel trailer that’s set up as a stationary tiny house, with her two dogs, too.

Initially, she had plans to do a van conversion, and move to Europe with it, but for now, she’s staying put where she’s at, in Lanzarote while running her own business producing, marketing, and selling camper-life related products.

Sarah’s Story:

My name is Sarah and me and my 3 dogs are living off-road in a caravan (trailer), on a small volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, called Lanzarote.

Because of the economy I lost all my jobs and couldn’t afford rent anymore, and me and my dogs moved into this caravan which was offered to us. I was already preparing to move into a van, but I had to cancel the buy when our country went into full lockdown back in March last year.

While living in the caravan I have started to build my own business, which is going pretty good considering I only started my business in October last year. The business I started is called “One Girl’s Footprint” and is all about my Tiny House Journey.
The caravan is located in the middle of the island and there is no paved road going there. There is no running water or electricity, and the toilet is an old fashioned outhouse. But I would not change living like this for the world!

My goal is to go back to my original plan to buy a van, convert it, and move in it with my dogs and travel Europe (and the rest of the world).

Oh Sarah, wishing you the very best in life and hope and pray all your dreams come true. You go girl and do it and never look back. Like you I love my furbabies here forever and I think yours are so cute and cuddly. Don’t ever give up your dreams and keep them going for you and for me as I gave up mine a long time ago because of a family situation…

Astounding she seems positive in what would be a bleak situation for most people. I’m curious how she was able to feed herself and her dogs prior to her business taking off.

Well, she did have some savings as she was planning to move to Europe before the lock down prevented that option. She just didn’t have enough to support paying rent but with the Caravan and off-grid living, she probably was able to stretch that out as then food would likely have been her biggest expense then…

However, according to reports from Lanzarote, the government provided temporary support for people who could not work during the lock down, which also caused a drop in the population as they relied heavily on tourism. So they went from a population of 450,000 per month to 150,000. But this meant there was full capacity available in terms of hospitals and health clinics, food supplies, electricity, water and other amenities, for all those who remained on the island… The population drop also helped minimize the impact the pandemic had on them there…

So she likely got a little help too and there are worse places to be besides being stuck on one of the Canary Islands during the lock down…

Great information! I am glad she has at least some support, and it sounds like she put it to good use starting a business that can not support her when she travels about Europe. What a smart gal! I love her home! The stone walls and few plants make a pretty setting for a cute camper. You go girl!

        Hi James,
Thank you for your reply back to my story.
I wish you were correct and that I indeed had some savings left, or support from the Spanish government. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I used all my savings to survive the lockdown we were under. Prices of food and even rent doubled so my savings were gone in only a few months.
I have been mainly living of charity or some amazing friends.
The support Spain offered only applied to people who had jobs to go back to once their companies open again. Poverty has been growing on the island, but it made the connection between people stronger. Also we are the worst off at the moment when it comes to COVID cases. Our economy thrives off of tourism and with borders being opened for a few months, more and more new cases arrived on the island.
We are again very restricted in movement, and socializing with other people is extremely restricted. Most likely another lockdown will be starting again soon.
Luckily for me I am happy where I am and keep working on my business to not be dependent on having to find work.
I hope my reply clarifies my situation a bit more for you.
        Have a wonderful day!
        Best,
        Sarah

      Hi Kurt,

      Thank you for your reply.
I’ve always been a positive person, and like to focus on the good in bad times.
I hope my story inspires other people to see the positive side when things go a little darker as well.
      Best,
      Sarah

@Sarah – Thank you for the clarification. I’m glad you have such amazing friends in such trying times, you make each other stronger for it.

It’s a shame the government wasn’t able to provide you some support, though they were suppose to include the self employed. However, they’re still expanding support and recently passed new legislation to that effect. So while you didn’t get any support before, maybe you may qualify to get some support as the new legislation takes effect but it may require contacting your local officials and filling out an application as there’s still a lot of bureaucracy to get through to get the aid, a lot of it being up to the local government to see how the funds are distributed, and it looks like that will also include a tax break and deferments, which should hopefully apply to you and your friends…

Regardless, your story is inspirational and it is good for the soul to focus on the good…
