Man Turns Woman’s NYC Micro Apartment into Tiny Palace

This post contains affiliate links.

Right now in this post I want to show you how Nate Berkus has turned this woman’s 250 sq. ft. micro apartment in NYC into a gorgeous tiny palace with storage galore throughout.

The kitchen was renovated with state of the art space saving appliances. One of the most unique parts of the home is how Nate used wall to wall floral curtains to create hidden storage (see below).

Now every square inch of Martha’s apartment is being properly utilized with appropriate storage and decor. See for yourself below and let me know what your thoughts are on it in the comments.

Love the kitties! As for the apt, big missed opt. If Nate had talked to someone like Kirsten Dirksen about space-saver projects and actual dual-use storage (rather than going all sponsor-big-box stuff), Martha could have a Murphy bed behind the vanity, or a multi-level, with just as much storage but without those HIDEOUS curtains or the claustraphobic tenting. (All daylight will be absorbed by the curtains, making it nice for someone with a daylight allergy.) The day bed could be alcoved to be used properly (middle of room, seriously!?!) and they could have added 3sf to that tiny bathroom. Points for a nice kitchen, remembering the kitties, and giving Martha a happy moment. But seriously, is she going to stay happy in that rectangular Yurt that isn’t even as big as a real Yurt? Nate is not my style in general, but this the worst thing I’ve ever seen him do.

I like the murphy bed idea for sure Elizabeth but she really seemed to love what was done and that’s all that matters sometimes (it’s not ours, its hers, right?) Thanks for sharing all of your great ideas too tho! And Kirsten has the some of the BEST video tours. Sorry you didn’t like this one. Good news is- there are lots more 🙂

Actually, I hope she remains happy with it, and even though my taste is perfect (HA), if we all had the same taste, it would be a boring world. And there is something to be said for seeing what he did with Big-Box pieces, b/c that is accessible and affordable for most of us. The overall look wasn’t my cup of tea, but there were good ideas there. That’s why I love your blog Alex, everything you share includes food for thought. Even if I’m in a snarky mood (sorry about that), you can depend on me enjoying those afternoons when I have the time to “visit” with you b/c I’m learning new stuff and seeing cool ideas. Thank you!

Just learned something new…that oven/micro/toaster etc and a dishwasher that fits beneath the sink! Wow. Something to consider for my cottage. (I live a sheltered life.) Thanks for sharing.

I remember this one and hated it. It is very tacky and all that fabric makes it look even smaller.

All that fabric make the room look really crowded, and as a result smaller. In the long run, its cleanliness will also become an issue. Dust and cat dander will cling to all that fabric. But the owner of the place wanted that kind of a look, and that is what most matters. I made this comment because I started wheezing (I have ashtma) just looking at it. The wheezing part is a joke….LOL.
