Lex and Liam decided to take on the amazing — and massive — project of converting a school bus into a tiny home on wheels. But their conversion is even more unique because they’ve been living in it during the conversion process!
For a year and a half, they’ve been making progress on the build, and it’s really starting to look like a home, complete with a beautifully tiled shower, spacious countertops, and a wood-burning stove. See how it’s all coming together below!

A Year & A Half Into Their Raised-Roof Bus Conversion
They raised the roof two feet!
There was lots of welding to do.
They filled it all with spray foam insulation.
Here they are working in the bathroom.
They added a front door.
It was a bit like camping at the start.
Beautiful tilework in the bathroom!
Their shower is ready for use!
They have an adorable cubic mini stove.
Lovely sink and countertop choice.
Here’s their kitchen at present.
And the view from their bedroom.
What an awesome couple!
Their Story:
We currently live full time in our skoolie in Boise, Idaho
We bought our bus back in May of 2021 and have spent the last year and a half turning it into a tiny home on wheels and we still have a ways to go !
We have done all of the work ourselves this past year and a half including raising our roof two feet so it has been pretty rough at times .
All in all we are invested at approx 30k
We built it as a combination of wanting the adventure of building a tiny home and being able to invest into our futures by taking rent out of the equation.
We truly love the tiny lifestyle and although it has its challenges we are very happy ! We cant wait to finish out the build of our tiny home in the coming months! When we moved from San Diego to Idaho, our engine blew up, so we had to get a 2 thousand dollar tow! Luckily we found a new engine for 3k and West will be back on the road soon!

Quite an adventure! I’m sure the additional skills you are picking up will do you well during your lifetimes. Your story made me smile. I’d love to hear about the finished bus and where you end up living in it. Extensive traveling?
Oh, I so hope we get to see the finished product!! So far, so exciting! Raising the windows gets them up where you can see out of them while working in the kitchen, so that’s nice. It also gets them up above peeping Tom level. I like that! I’ve had four peeping Tom incidents in my tiny houses in the 10 years I’ve been living in them, so that’s an important issue with me. It also gives you some wall space in the living area to lean a pillow or two. The bathroom is gorgeous. You two are amazing. Can’t wait to see more.
