For less money, I could buy a larger piece of land in Texas… build my own lake… build a large steel garage with part living quarters and part woodshop/workshop and have less money invested and more privacy… plus a larger living area on the ground floor and no loft or stairs to climb.

Size of living area depends on the size of the home, how it’s usage is optimized, and not the state it’s in… Not every building in Texas is big and without a loft…

That said, there are reasons why a lot of people are migrating to states like Texas but keep in mind that it wouldn’t be the same… Not the same climate zone, not the same weather, not the same wildlife, not the same plants and trees, not the same nature preserves, not the same access to resources, not the same local history and culture, not the same access to jobs, not the same access to natural resources, etc. There’s a long list of differences… Some of them may appeal to someone but others may not…

A home in Texas will pretty much never have to worry about snow vs homes in Washington state that do have to deal with that but people in Washington can have seasonal activities like going skiing, which isn’t an option in Texas…Again, among many other differences…

Besides, it’s impractical to expect everyone to just go to one place because then that place becomes over populated, costs skyrocket, resources get depleted, land becomes unobtainable, etc…

Reasons people live where they do and what they have to deal with there are based on multiple factors that’s really only relevant to where they are living and comparisons to other places only matter to people willing to move and live a different life but that’s not a option or what is necessary wanted by everyone… and as stated conditions for any one area can always change for better or worse and it’s not all going to be one sided or simple which is which…

I love this, especially the downstairs bedroom. And the extra building for living space would hold my grand piano quite nicely. Lofts for kids and grandkids, lots of yard for the flowers I love, and a lake for the kayak. But my husband’s not quite ready to retire yet.
