Jon & Christina’s SIP-Built DIY THOW in Florida

This post contains affiliate links.

Jon is a PC-gamer in law school and Christina is finishing up her Master’s degree. After a three-year long-distance relationship, Christina sold her 1200 square foot fixer-upper in North Carolina and moved down to Florida to live with Jon. She’d been a fan of tiny homes for a long time, and it seemed like a great chance for the couple to save money and pay down student loans.

They’re lucky enough to park on Jon’s parent’s land, and they used SIPs (structurally insulated panels) to create the frame and roof of the home. As such, all their walls are magnetic, which is kind of neat!

The home is 32’ long, 8.5’ wide, 13.5’ tall, and has two lofts — a Master loft with stair access, and then a craft/reading loft with a really neat sliding DIY ladder. Tiny Home Tours did a great video tour of the place which can watch below!

Very nice. I love the lived in vibes it gives off.

Very “at home” feeling. It’s amazing how wood floors and countertops with white walls and ceiling make the space look twice as spacious, and the decorating adds the home touch. Great job. It’s beautiful!

Love it! It’s pretty much everything I’d want in a tiny home. Thanks for sharing!

what wood flooring are you useing that will hold up with building a tiny home on wheels?

I’m not sure what they used, but in general wood flooring is quite durable and there shouldn’t be an issue with using it in a tiny house, except that it’s heavier than the alternatives such as luxury vinyl planks (which are also more waterproof).

Except that vinyl planks are much, much thinner than wood. So need to be adhered to a base. Which may or may not be an issue. While waterproof, to an extent, the adhesive make it awkward to remove without damaging the base (floor). Trade offs I suppose… but I’d say that they are more comfortable on the feet than wood. Quite warm in fact.
