This is to announce and invite you to represent the tiny house movement this June 1, 2019, at the National Mall near the U.S. Capitol alongside Zack Giffin of Tiny House Nation, Andrew Bennett of Core Housing Solutions, Ben Carson, secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (also known as HUD) secretary, and others where affordable housing seems to be a topic of concern.

The event is called the Innovative Housing Showcase and it is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). If you are a builder, designer, engineer, or inventor, it may not be too late to get involved as an exhibitor. Here’s a link to the application. The exhibit takes place at the National Mall.

Join me in Washington DC on the lawn of the United States capitol! On Saturday, June 1st you are invited to be a part of an extraordinary event called the Innovative Housing Showcase. This gathering is being put on by HUD and is meant to be a display of new home technologies in hopes of facilitating conversations about the effect that these new technologies can have on the affordable housing crisis. These are the conversations that I have been waiting to have for a long time.

Ben Carson the HUD secretary will be on stage at 10 am Saturday. I have an on-stage interview at 1:00pm and then at 2:00 I will be moderating a conversation with some of the wisest members of the tiny home community. Historian Alexis Stephens @tiny_house_expedition , community organizer Elisabeth Singleton @buildushope and industry professional Andrew Bennett @corehousingsolutions will each bring a unique perspective and wealth of experience to a conversation aimed at inspiring elevated dialogue.1

This gathering is being put on by HUD and is meant to be a display of new home technologies in hopes of facilitating conversations about the effect that these new technologies can have on the affordable housing crisis. These are the conversations that I have been waiting to have for a long time. New technologies in modular construction, virtual reality and 3D printing, are on the cusp of transforming the cost and wast of building homes. This is the first time that alternative building methods have been showcased like this and I see it as a sign that our country is ready to consider new options that make housing more energy efficient and attainable. It is a sign of real progress for the tiny home movement and should be of great interest to any activist with an interest in affordable housing or environmental sustainability. Ben Carson the HUD secretary will be on stage at 10 am Saturday. I have an on-stage interview at 1:00pm and then at 2:00 I will be moderating a conversation with some of the wisest members of the tiny home community. This is a great opportunity for anyone who has wanted to actively help change restrictions to tiny homes. Let’s all show up at the nations capital and impress to all the influential people and members of Congress that we are ready to embrace new solutions. #tippingpoint

If the purpose is to involve HUD in the tiny house movement, then I am frightened that the tiny house DIY will be banished and the whole industry will be under the auspices of the federal government which will make it impossible for the individual to build and live in his own tiny house without meeting government codes and requirements. Tread carefully. I have been a licensed contractor before and know how rigid these restrictions can be. Tread carefully. . .

Thanks, Marsha, nice words of warning.

This is a good topic for discussion…

Because it’s like there are two simultaneous tiny house movements… The DIY one, and the one where we just inspire the government and developers to build smaller products.

And I think both are important and that there is room in the country/world for both.

To continue adding to this though, the truth is, that the true essence of the tiny house movement *is* DIY.
