Johnny Spire’s Luxurious Tiny House on Wheels

A few days ago I got an e-mail from a guy named Johnny about a tiny house he built on a trailer. After a few exchanges, he said he’d be glad if I shared the information and pictures with you. Some of you might be excited to know that it’s for sale.

The house weighs about 9,000 pounds. Johnny built the trailer from 6″ channel steel which was reclaimed from a tractor plant in Kansas City that was torn down. He said, “It’s good old American made steel from the 1940’s”. The trailer is 8′ 6″ wide and 20′ long.

The axles are reclaimed from a mobile home. Johnny installed 12×2 Dexter Electric brakes on one of the trailer’s axles.

The other axle is an idler axle with no brakes. The trailer, of course, is hooked up with the away stop sensor, tail, and side lights.

The house itself measures approximately 8′ by 20′ total and has two carpeted sleeping areas.

There’s a sleeping loft upstairs and another area to sleep on the main level.

The floor in the downstairs of Johnny’s tiny house are made out of reclaimed lumber from a barn that was about 95 years old.

The kitchen cabinets are oak and the countertop is a pink/gray granite.

The refrigerator and sink are stainless steel and the stovetop has 2 burners.

There’s a separate area for the shower and toilet.

On the exterior of this tiny cabin on wheels, it’s covered with cedar siding and painted pale green with white trim.

The shingles have a 25-year guarantee and are dark green.

Insulation is R-13 and R-19 in the walls, floors, and ceiling.

It comes with a relatively large ceiling fan that has lighting. It also has a flat-screen television mounted on the wall already.

The tires on the trailer are brand new and are 8-14.5 trailer tires.

The water heater has a 6-gallon tank and runs from propane. It’s under the bed area downstairs.

This sleeping area can accommodate a full or queen size bed which is currently not in the house.

The interior walls are covered in drywall, glued, and screwed to the studs. Johnny says, “I have pulled it and have not noticed any problems with the drywall cracking.”

There is also a tile backsplash where the cabinets are. He says, “I’d say the house is made up of 40 to 45% reclaimed materials.”

It took him more than a year to complete the home and the reason Johnny’s selling it is because he’s starting a new project which will take up most of his time.

If you’re interested, he’s asking for $29,500. You can reach Johnny at jlscal at aol dot com. That’s JLSCAL at AOL dot COM.

Update: SOLD.

The sheetrock did not crack?? No joint cracking?? I am building a tinyhome and would love to use sheet rock, I’m just afraid it would crack being pulled down the road.
I love the fact that it’s so bright in your Tinyhome.

I have my tiny house built with Sheetrock on the interior. The ceiling is t&g pine. So far I have moved it about 300 km (180 miles) and only have one hairline crack. It is in the very center (lengthwise) of my unit. So Sheetrock does not seem to be a problem.

Sweet! You can tell that a lot of love and care went into the building of this cute little cottage and whoever buys it will really enjoy it’s cozy atmosphere. Cute couple, too! 😉

Hello. This house looks beautiful. I wanted to ask: did Johnny use a modified Tumbleweed house plan for building this ? If not, then did he use his own plans ?

    • February 18, 2012, 1:03 pm

Hey Eddie, good question, I’m not sure right now but I’ll let you know if I find out.

  • February 18, 2012, 12:36 pm

Wow, I really like the finishes on your tiny house on wheels. Where is it located?

LOVE IT!!! It’s so homey. And the colors are just perfect. I have one question…what is the carpeted area that is seen in the corner of the picture of the bath area? Hopefully it’s the closet area? Bet it’s already sold!=Dawn

      February 6, 2013, 11:57 pm

Dawn, to me, it looks like the picture was taken pointed down towards the toilet, but from the loft. Not sure, but that looks like it to me.

  • Maria
    September 29, 2012, 9:27 am

Dawn has a good question. What is that carpet space in the bathroom? Is that where a bed goes? Would not want my bed in a bathroom. The loft is out for me in sleeping. I’m 56 and climbing a ladder to go to bed at night is out of the question. If the house was alittle longer you could have a smallbedroom in the back. All the small houses on wheels have lofts, good for young people, not older ones. The old folks need tiny homes too.

    Very nice interior work!

I do notice that there is not much in the way of seating and dining and I think I would reduce that kitchen to about half and put in a bar/desk with seating.

I am always curious as to why people put their doors in the end with a porch cut out as that reduces the square footage in the house ?

It looks nice but if the door was placed in a sidewall that whole end could have been used for a couch bed or permanent bed for people that do not want to climb up into the loft to sleep.

Nice “catch” on the entry door design idea, LaMar! Although I do love Jonny’s tiny house interior design (I think he did an awsome job!), I too like the entry door on the side to increase the home’s square footage. This is what I’ve done for my own tiny house on wheels design; and, I love the roominess feel of the interior with the door on the side.

      • Victoria
        April 10, 2013, 5:48 pm

I designed my own TH and it is not unlike this design. It is 8×24, 7′ wide bedroom on the tongue end, then pocket door, then the 3′ wide split bath as this design has, then pocket door, then 4′ or 5′ kitchen and the rest living space with the entry on what would be the passenger side.
I will be eventually completely off grid, so there is a two sided storage being built on the tongue, one side for my outdoor/gardening stuff storage, the other side for my off grid electrical bank. I am also putting in an on-demand hot water heater.
I will eventually have an enclosed porch for my pups and I to enjoy the outdoors and a special little yard for them to use if I’m not home.
I am deciding on siding right now, leaning towards cedar lap. I am doing a metal roof and wool insulation. There will not be any gas fixtures as I can’t be around it. The loft will only be used for company. I am researching healthy and environmentally friendly paint and am looking at a milk paint for the inside and an old fashioned Swiss paint for the outside.
I already have downsized to a 7’x15′ shed so I am upgrading to this luxurious TH.

    Mr. Spire,

Several people asked the question I had. What is that area behind the toilet and shower? It would be great if you could update the information at the beginning of the post when you find out. I am collecting ideas for studio/guest cottage and we love the look of this.

    • Johnny spire
      January 5, 2013, 11:53 pm

Rickey, that area is where a full size mattress goes. Its directly behind where the front tow end of the house is….. My 81 yr old mother wanted a sleeping area downstairs so she didnt have to climb a ladder to a loft….. so thats what we did…loft above, bedroom area downstairs… it sleeps 4 very comffrtably…..also in the next 3 weeks we are starting to build 8 1/2 by 24 tiny house shells that can be purchased either with trailer, bring your own and we.ll mount it for you, or as a stand alone building set on a slab crawlspace, basement ….and delivered to your door…tell us what yoou want buillt, how much finiisshing work yoou want done, and we can save you all a ton of money and time…. we are aat (Link Expired: huntingcabinsrus.com) Thanks Johnny

Very nice. Like several others, I’m curious about the carpeted area on the other side of the toilet.

But from what I can see I’m tempted to move into that bathroom–love the set up. I also like the kitchen drawers. Thanks for showing it pulled out.

Mr Spire, I’m happy to know that there are tiny house builders in MO, my home state. I love the thought of going small while staying on the grid.

Mr.Spire commented in his artical that the carpeted areas were sleeping areas…..It looks like a single bed would fit in beside the bathroom. I think we are all full of christmas overload….or, maybe we didn’t notice but the first responses are almost 1 year ago……lololol

Way too heavy. Looks beautiful and exceptional craftsmanship but more meant for a stationary home. Where’s the ladder to access the loft? Where does it store? With counters flanking the bathroom door, you will need to move the ladder every time you go to the lew. Appears to be professionally staged but not by a tiny house person. Where will you eat? Only one chair? And can you see the TV from that chair. It is some of the best craftsmanship I have seen in a tiny but wonder if the builder has spent any time in one.

the exterior is great! the insides….bad design. I guess most people who like this appreciate the bed not being in a loft. but the toilet and shower RIGHT NEXT to the bed and not closed off ???? that is just nasty! No bathroom sink so people are washing their hands in the kitchen sink after using the toilet?
The more houses I look at, the more its obvious that side entry doors work better in a tiny even though I love the style of these front entry better. because with the front entry, the kitchen and bath are going to get scrunched together.
