This is Dan and Deborah’s incredible yurt treehouse in Geneva, Florida which is northeast of Orlando on their five-acre property called Danville.

I’ve never really thought of or ever seen a yurt that also happens to be a treehouse, have you?

You will be staying in rural Seminole County adjacent to a private airport community. At the end of the airstrip you will find Fort Lane Park located on Lake Harney which is part of the St. Johns River. The tree-house is located on a separate 5 acre parcel you have the opportunity to roam through the trails and use a private golf cart.1

Located 4 miles east is the Jolly Gator restaurant and County boat ramp. 2 miles to the west is the Geneva General restaurant. Both have become favorites with my guests.1

Danville is the creation from the imagination of Dan Shaw. With the help of Deborah, his wife of 50 years, they set out to build a guest house on their private airstrip in Geneva, Florida.1

Fulfill your dream of staying in a tree house! For safety reasons, this venue is for adults only. We do not allow children or pets. The Treehouse has a tree trunk elevator, private shower, air-conditioning, and real toilet so that you can bring your significant other(no compost toilet here). This 18 foot yurt has accent lighting to create the mood of living in the trees on a starry night. Bring a steak to put on the grill and then spend the evening at the fire pit.

My wife and I were thrilled to see this newest piece in your daily newsletter. We were fortunate to stumble across Danville and its host with the most, Dan, a few years back. The treehouse yurt was not on the property yet. However, there were (and still are) several other wonderful and unique overnight accommodations on the premises. The main house is huge and beautiful (and includes an indoor movie theater to boot). Amazingly, out front and attached to the home is the original large airplane hanger that Dan and his sons converted into the “town of Danville,” including a tavern, post office and assorted other homey touches. You have to see it to believe it. Then, there is a separate wonderful platformed yurt (with alpacas fenced in in back) for overnight stays. Finally, there is also what the call the “man cave” which is a bit further back and is another old hanger converted into more overnight accommodations with a “man caves” bent. If you can reserve an overnight stay (not always easy as its also a favored wedding venue among other things) do yourself a favor and book it. The area is also interesting to roam around and there are hiking trails (also, on top of the restaurants mentioned in this article, we also stumbled across a bar about 15 min away that also had a pinball museum of sorts in it and was filled in the back with terrific old-timey and operating pinball machines and we enjoyed playing them). The Orlando attractions are about a 50 min drive SW from Danville.

What Dan and his sons did on their own in converting an old airstrip into year round accommodations is frankly, imho, amazing and extremely creative.I wish I had half his energy and imagination. It truly is well worth visiting and, his time permitting, Dan is a very pleasant host who will chat about the place and the area at length.
I like the forklift mast and pump. I did a similar setup for my Dad in the shop years ago. Prop and attach a mast and a pump then build a floor over the forks. It is the simplest way to do a one-floor elevator; gravity drops. Great job and the cowling too!
I literally live here and had never heard any of this information about Danville! I’ve heard of the town “Danville” but nothing about its uniqueness. Within the next year, I will be spending a weekend in the yurt treehouse! Following my stay, I will let everyone know how it was…. thanks for featuring this really cool property Alex!

Very clever. Looks fantastic! Lake Harney has some of the best big bass fishing and big gator hunting to be had in Florida.
These are the type of tiny house stories I just absolutely love to see and read about, so much clever creativity went into this, what a joy to see in pictures. I am sure in real life – unforgettable!
I am over two and a half years into a tree hazard potential assessment study. I see some possible implications in your photos that might be some cause for concern and management over time. I presume that you either are highly knowledgeable about trees or had a consultant who was. However, none of us knows everything. There are ATP’s and private pilots like me–I would not deign to don your uniform.
Trees are living things and must be treated as such. The penalties for ignoring this fact can be severe. If you’re interested in further feedback, I will be happy to do what I can to at least provide some independent observations that might lead to questions to ask your experts.
Wayne, while I understand your concern, the house is in fact set “amongst” the trees. It isn’t actually attached “to” the trees. Doing that would cause all sorts of distortion issues as the trees grow and ultimately become dangerous.
I was thinking of the part in the interior.
Does anyone know where to purchase the elevator?
Don’t know where that one was purchased but there’s a number of companies that sell residential vertical platform lift systems for exterior use and a few also do interior elevators. Usually caters to wheelchair access and similar special needs and can be added to an existing structure to retrofit it…
So just do a search and you’ll see a number of them to choose from and just see which are more local to you…
I think the yurt home is so unique and would love to live in it! Plenty of outdoor space makes it perfect.

That elevator does not appear to be code-compliant. That is a huge amount of liability. I’m afraid it is an accident waiting to happen…..I hope nobody gets hurt!
Ok, firstly I’m not the Eric who previously posted. Just so’s there ain’t no confusion.
While this “is” amazing, I’d classify it as a house up amongst the trees as the house is not “in” the trees.
But extraordinary build, that’s for sure… and by not being attached to a tree, or trees, then no issues with the trees growing and twisting it all out of shape.
Total kudos to the designer/builder.
Super nice idea etc. I would do 2 things if possible in future–The nice paint scheme be added to the elevator in whatever way appropriate– add platform etc from underneath, so can be looking up at as much sky as possible in future, and add a type of covering for underneath the sink area. Just kinda pulls from all the nice decor & work everwhere else!! But Bravo–esp. whole Danville ptoject.
To complete my previous post-I was trying to mention moving tge Hot Tub from underneath yurt for better star gazing–but messed up my comment– Hope it may make sense now☺

Dan’s entire complex is ingenious and it is amazing what he has done with things most of us would never dream having turned into a place to stay. Even the original structure, the aircraft hanger he converted into a full house with a movie theater as well as a small town front, including a workable pub, is amazing. We stayed there several years back and were blown away. On top of it he’s very sociable (yet humble), loves to chat up his guests, and created and built the whole now multi-unit complex himself with the assistance of only his sons pretty much. Very much worth a visit or two or three…..
