High School Students Build 20′ Tiny House on Wheels

This post contains affiliate links.

Concord (CA) High School students have completed the Construction Tech Program’s first Tiny House on Wheels.

With the help of our community partners Ashby Lumber, West Coast Windows and Doors, and Tumbleweed our goal is to make the program self-sustaining.

The class was able to learn all aspects of residential construction and the THOW was our culminating project.

The design is based on the Tumbleweed Cypress Equator 20′.

What do you think of this tiny house layout? You can use the room next to the bathroom as a bedroom, office, or even a walk-in closet! What would you use yours for?

Here’s a look inside the room!

Just an FYI: I think either the photo or the plan is flipped. They don’t match up together. I really like the covered entrance with a light. That’s a nice touch. I do have a couple of questions: What does the bathroom look like? I went on the blog spot but couldn’t really find it. But that could be because the pictures were slow to load on my computer. And does the bench in the downstairs bedroom fold out to make the bed? Lastly, is that a pantry or a utility closet next to the sink in the kitchen? Would love to see more pictures.

Note- this story is from 2016! It mentions an event that happened last year.

Great job! They made a great little Tiny House. Love the extra room beside the bathroom. 🙂

    Full Disclosure!
The counter top was damaged and is being replaced this week. That is the opening you see above the drawer base.

Inside the bench are the water tank, water heater, and water pump.

We started the project last school year and finished it up this year.
Our school board approved our selling of the house last night. That is why it is now being listed.
The bath has a sink, toilet, exhaust fan, and 36×32 shower and I’ll try to figure out how to add pictures…
    Thanks for looking!

    Hi,

First of all, this is a very nice 1st time tiny house! I like it better than many I’ve seen. But congratulations.

Here are some things to consider….. All wood interiors get a little too much. Go with white or off-white walls. (I remember a café who changed their paint color from a yellow-tan crème to white, and I couldn’t believe how much bigger the white made their café appear!)Keep the floor wood if you wish. But to me a 20ft tiny home needs every inch allocated to indoor living. So please ….no inset front porch. One can always add a collapsible covered porch. How much insulation is there. Im currently living in a SIP constructed house. Its stronger than a stick build house, and much more energy efficient. I like lots of counter space, but I see you have an extended counter. Consider hinges so that counter space can fold down. Im OK with the small bedroom IF their is air circulation or a fan and maybe a place for a small 20″-24″ TV hanging from above or at least an electrical outlet for such ! Also I hope there are female students who are involved in building and critiquing. You guys have SO MUCH to be proud of…. I wished our high school was doing such ! And it looks like its very well built! I hope you get your $20K or more for this project and build more of these tiny homes for yourselves and possibly veterans.

Thank you for the feedback, Sherry!
To address your most important point,
My construction class is usually 15-20% female and struggle every year to increase it. My woodworking classes get up to 30%.
We installed fiberglass batt in the floor, walls, and ceiling. This year we will use rigid floor insulation and commercially sprayed insulation at the walls and roof. No porch, the door will be on the side. Thanks, for the idea of the drop-down counter space.
What sort of wall covering would you suggest that we can apply directly to the studs? We are also considering full length “dormer” style roof and a double loft configuration of sorts. Any thoughts?

I love the tiny house. I do disagree with painting the interior white though. For day to day living white is an awful color to deal with. Personally I love the wood….give it a realy rustic feel and clean. Kudos to the young people who put so much time and effort into this project. If I lived in CA I’d be bidding on this gem but alas I’m in Hawaii and shipping the finished product here would be cost prohibitive if I won. Keep up the great work.

I, too, dislike white walls. Too sterile 🙂
