He built a Sci-Fi tiny house that’s a Lunar lander replica

This is the story of Naval architect Kurt Hughes and the incredible sci-fi tiny house that he built which is a replica of a Lunar Lander spacecraft designed to for a Moon landing. This isn’t the first time that Hughes has built something out of the ordinary, but he’s been working on this project for the last seven years (on weekends) using inspiration and his experience from the world of boat construction. Kurt’s Lunar Lander Sci-Fi tiny house is located in Beverly, Washington and he currently uses it as a getaway/vacation cabin.

This is very likely one of the most unique, innovative, and interesting tiny homes we’ve gotten to show you this year. Our biggest thanks to Jenna over at Tiny House Giant Journey and her popular and awesome YouTube Channel for allowing us to collaborate and share this with you. Mr. Hughes also runs a blog called the Lunar Lander Dwelling which you can check out.

See how he used boat construction methods to build it? Interesting, isn’t it?

How hard and more importantly for how long would you be willing to work on your dream to make it a reality? Kurt did this over 7 years on weekends. Incredible!

Video Tour: Naval architect uses boatbuilding skills to build his own Lunar Lander Tiny House

How It Was Built

Steel was used to build the staircase and the legs/stilts and the rest of the sci-fi tiny house was built using composite SIP panels with high-grade plywood sandwiching the insulation foam, glued together with epoxy and fiberglass. He explains it in more detail in the video which you can play above or click here to go to YouTube and watch.

In the UK they’d call this a folly.

I’d say its a folly in 50 foot high letters.

An old saying, a fool and his (or her) money is soon parted.

Truly, I can’t see the point of this except for his amusement. And yes… YMMV

Some would say if you can’t enjoy life then what’s the point… Besides, he can rent it out and more than make his money back…

True, James, and how much money do people throw away on season tickets to ball games, recreational boats and fishing gear, cruises, etc. It’s all about feeding the nature that is yours, and some people need more creative food than others, right? Whatever makes you happy (without hurting somone else), and to each his own.

I love this! It’s a wonderful creation. Not particularly practical, but still useful and fun, and a great expression of creative talent. I’m impressed at how light it is, and how he engineered it to be supported by the insect-like legs. Good job.

A wonderful successful story. The tiny house would appeal only to the people who like odd place’s to live or stay at. Not for me. The tiny house is very creative.

This is the coolest piece of art ever! The skill involved in putting this module together is amazing. I love the tiny kitchen and the levels of living inside. It is so cool! The balcony was a good plan. What a view! You know, I think I remember seeing a picture years ago of that geodesic building you put together when you were in college. You were a cutie! Anyway, this is a wonderful and unique build of which you can be very proud!

Not really my cup of tea. However, I won’t share this one with my hubby as he is all stuff space (including lunar landers), and I just know he’d be looking for a little piece of land to build one on!
