This is the Hale Kilo I’a in Kailua, Hawaii.

Hale Kilo I’a is a unique twist on Hawaiian and modern architecture. Hale Kilo I’a is a collaborative project between H1 Construction & Fujita+Netski Architecture (together called H1+FN Design Collaborative). Playing with the idea of dual structures & the use of a creative wall, this project creates a private oasis right in the heart of Kailua. These humble structures work at creating a unique tension that is meant to always excite guests with shape, form, & color.

I for one appreciate articles that show aspects of close proximity housing. Even a guest house can have great ideas for those looking to live in a smaller footprint. Keep up the good work of finding variety of style and options.

Clean design, startling rug. I’d stick to paler ocean colors for a little more relaxing mood. Not tiny really, but small. Great open feeling, I can feel the breeze go through……
    Very Nice

Though I understand the concept I find butterfly roofs really odd. Every instinct in me screams “NO!” Could just be all the years in snow country wanting every scrap of snow to slide off.

It may not have to be snow. But I like the light colors and brightness throughout the house and guest house. That is an interesting idea of a door in the bathroom next to the shower, if you live near on the lake or ocean, you rinse off before going into the rest of the house, there is a shower. I would want a door for privacy, but be able to open it for coming from the outside. The quest quarter, is nice and bright, and peaceful, I also like the Lanai with the roof over it, so it doesn’t get to hot I can see myself sitting out there and working or playing on my laptop while having lunch or dinner and being near the pool. I could live there in Kauai. How beautiful it is. I can enjoy the breezy not so hot but not so cold temps all year round.

alice h, perhaps you’d like to see an article from 2013 and compare re: the roof.

I looked at that roof & wondered how well it’d stand up to a tropical storm. Looks like it’d catch ALL the wind & blow right off… 🙁

Thanks for sharing our story Tiny House Talk!

This whole team (and the owner as well) were super chill & down-to-earth folks to work with. The owner (who we never met before) let us stay at the tiny structure for 4 days to really feel the whole space.

The biggest lesson we learned from this project is that the roof makes all the different in these tiny house. The shed roof creates the illusion of a bigger space…and it’s really noticable when mixed with 9ft ceilings (vs 8). We tried to capture the space the best we could…but it’s tough to understand the proportions & feeling without actually being inside.

    Thanks again!

Love the concept. Always thought it would be great to have mini houses for Guest or hobbies or what ever. I really love the design. Very creative, out of the box architecture.

I absolutely love this idea of a compound with shared common buildings and individual personal space.

Deb D. : EXACTLY! That’s what my husband & I want to do with our family. Our two sons & their wives, my dad, & my father-in-law ( & us, of course) want to each have our own space, but have a large community gathering space with a large kitchen so we can do the canning & preserving of the garden harvest together as a family. I think it’s a great way to really get back to a truly close-knit family unit without driving each other totally crazy (lol)

Love! I really like the interesting rooflines and it gives me thought for when I build my tiny/small abode of my own. Having spent time in HI, I see why this makes such great sense. There are definitely aspects that I can borrow for my neck of the woods. Thanks for posting.

It’s probably here because the owner of the site thought people might want to see how a tiny house can be used for a guest house. No one said ALL tiny houses are THOWs!

    • Eric
      July 2, 2016, 4:10 am

All the rest of the amenities are in the main house. So? Plenty of Tiny Homes here do not have a kitchen in the house. This “guest quarters” has 2. One outside and another in the other structure.

Part of the rationale of this website, and Alex can correct me if I am wrong, is to showcase different styles, different perspectives, and nothing is wrong… merely different. And, as Michael L indicated, it is the owners website and he can publish what he wants. If he wanted to have an article on Pavlovas he could. Don’t think he would, delicious as they are, but the ultimate decision is Alex’s and Alex’s alone.

If you don’t like it go visit some other site that plays by your rules. It is a (generally) free planet after all.

Another thought, I would want to have my family and I to be there, a structure for each person their bedroom, and bath, and a central one with the living/kitchen/dining for all of us to gather in. If we don’t get to live in Hawaii, but the same concept anywhere we lived.

Like the compound idea. Like the concrete floor. Could not tell if they collected water from the roof. The pool is a cool idea just maintaining a pool might be more than I would want although that is why you have lawn and pool guys. I think a big stylized dragon gargoyle for the butterfly roof gutter spout done by a local artist could be fun. Lawn space is nice add some raised garden beds with a drip irrigation system. Must keep in mind this is a place when you stay nobody would want to do housework or yardwork.

I love this house, some people like me with four daughters cringe when I think of all 6 of us living in a tiny home. However I still love the idea of it, of only living with what you actually need, and being able to enjoy time on other things, being able to travel etc. But looking at this house (tiny to many, even if not officially a tiny house) makes me think, wow we could do this, not even with the guest quarters, but we could all probably actually live in the one home. Or even buying something like this for a summer home, might b a little cheaper, and has such a different feel compared to a traditional home. I love it!

Are these vacation rentals or actual homes? I would rent one for a month, definitely, but too big for a Tiny Home.

    • Alex
      September 3, 2016, 12:04 pm

It’s an actual home (the smaller one is the guest house)

And yeah for sure it’s definitely more small than tiny (to me)

How can you have a curved roof like that, won’t the rain hold in the middle with leaves and limbs?

  • September 5, 2017, 2:35 pm

These house ( I do not know why), evoke, some of the elements of the church designed by Le Cornusier “Notre Dame de Haut”, Rochamp (1954), but in this case, however, more rigid in the line…I end “The Architecture is the rigorous and magnifivent wise game of volumes under light”. By
Charles Edouard Jeanneret or Le Corbusier

I for one love it, and I consider it a tiny home. I live in, what I consider a tiny home. We gutted a 700 sq.foot lil house a few doors from the beach and made it our dream home. I have barn doors 35 drawers in my kitchen !! A tiny fire place.. the works !! Lol took me 3 months to design it and it looks like a tiny farm house. Love tiny living ❤️

I like how the toilet is hidden; notice that Designers are starting to do this more & am glad as I think it is a hideous thing to plonk in the middle of a beautiful bathroom….why would someone want to lounge in a tub looking at someone sitting on a toilet? Nice home….Thank you.
