Woman Buys Old Greyhound Bus on eBay for $7k and Spends 3 Years Remodeling it into a Chic Tiny Home

This post contains affiliate links.

This is the story of Jessie Lipskin, a young lady from Manhattan who decided to buy an old 1966 GMC Greyhound bus on eBay for $7,000 to turn into her very own tiny home on wheels.

So Jessie spent the next three years and $70k professionally remodeling it, plus an additional $55,000 on various other expenses to repair and maintain it to make it what it is today. The bus is 40ft long and 10ft wide so it offers about 400 square feet.

By the way, she’s now selling the bus for an asking price of $149,000 because she has plans to travel internationally so if you’re interested in taking it off her hands it’s available and she’s considering all offers.

1966 GMC Greyhound Commuter Bus to Tiny Home Description

This stunning and contemporary RV/Tiny Home was constructed in a 1966 GMC Commuter Greyhound. The Greyhound’s classic body style and great condition made the perfect fit for a beautiful Tiny Home conversion. All mechanics have been restored, and the bus is currently in running condition. The Tiny Home’s interior has been completely renovated and designed by an architect and the fine finishes have been meticulously constructed by a skilled carpenter. With more than $125,000 invested in restoring this bus (see chart in photos), this home is now an innovative, eco-friendly, beautifully-designed piece of art. The bus offers two sleeping areas and one full-sized bath, comfortably sleeping 4 people.

Upon entering this radiant home, one is immediately drawn to the brand-new hardwood flooring and walls of windows which flood the space in natural light throughout the day. The first of two cozy sleeping spaces is located towards the back of the bus and is large enough to fit a full-sized mattress. There are a variety of storage options located throughout the home, along with three large closets. The home is illuminated by LED lighting with dimmers throughout, allowing for a tranquil ambiance.

The modern and spacious kitchen is conveniently situated in the center of the bus, boasting a large sink, additional storage options, drawers, wooden counter tops, an oven and stove top. This area also houses an energy-efficient washing machine/drying spinner and instant hot water heater and propane tank. A full bathroom with a standing shower is located adjacent to the kitchen space, along with a separate closet. Two central air units are in the home, both of which have individual thermostats. A full size pull-out bed is located towards the front of the bus, offering an additional sleeping area.

It is beautiful, but much too expensive. And where are you going to park it? It is much too long to fit unobtrusively in a back yard.
Compared to NYC prices, I am sure that it sounds like a gasp worthy bargain, but the real estate to place it within zoning regulations would still make it out of reach and/or impractical for full time living.
It is a fine work of art, though. Best job on a rehab that I have seen.

It’s essentially a Class A RV now, so it can be parked anywhere that people park Class A RV’s…

Choices are more limited for such a large vehicle but there are RV parks and some even exclusively cater to Class A’s, as well as some camp grounds that can handle such a large vehicle. While not everyone has a small back yard and some even have large enough garages…

But if the owner wants to live a nomadic life then that’s doable even in New York… There’s actually a number of full time RV’ers in New York… Legally, New York imposes a 24 hour public parking limit on RV’s but that’s usually only enforced if someone files a complaint and you can just move on to another spot for another 24 hours…

There are hassles like if you’re carrying more than ten pounds of propane, you will not be able to go through any tunnels without prior clearance from the Department of Transportation… If you are going over any bridges with propane, you are required to travel on the upper level every time.

RVs are also not allowed on any New York State Parkways if your rig meets the following criteria:

      Over 5,500 pounds
      Uses combined plates
      Carrying roof top cargo
Is classified as a trailer or moving van

But you can travel on any New York State Expressways in any type of RV… NYC basically treats most RV’s as commercial vehicles…

There’s options like like Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, NJ that’s only 15 minutes away from Manhattan for a more stable option, etc.

But there’s a lot of properties outside of the city where you can have more options… Assuming, the new owner of this even keeps it in New York state…

It is a quality re do for sure! I would be shocked if it sells at that price. I hope it does for her sake for all she has put into it money and time wise. She could face a stumbling block in its design and layout. Maybe some research of other remodels could have helped with use of space and more designated areas, example: A medicine cabinet over the bathroom sink and not behind the drivers seat at the front of the bus. Given the selling price and an incomplete bathroom. No living room area to sit back and relax. No real dining area or a comfortable place to sit….

Soooo beautiful! Well thought out floor plan, lovely decoration, and very practical settings. I love the pull out bed with the slats. The bathroom is gorgeous, and so is the kitchen. Lots of house, but does “running condition” mean all parts under the hood are new or refurbished?

A lot of RV parks are adding sites to accommodate the 40′-45′ RV with 50amp service, too. So staying in a park is an option. If it is 10′ wide, and 40′ long, does one have to have a class B CDL to drive it? Something to check. I drove 45′ school buses for several years, and it is nowhere near as hard as you would think, but does take some training. I am more comfortable driving a school bus with all its mirrors than I am driving my truck. Again, lovely house. I would want to see receipts before paying that price, although t is easy to drop $30,000 fixing up the things under the hood of a diesel this big. It is truly lovely.

Here in Arizona you can get a diesel pusher modern motorhome for a fraction of the cost that she is asking.
However, New York… cannot get a hole in the wall apartment for that price… so probably a good deal there.

John, that is kind of comparing apples to oranges in a way. But, I bet when someone buys that one, they will take it out of the city. I bet there are many that have a piece of property where there won’t be a problem to park it. I do know there are some RV parks and mobile home parks that have restrictions due to age of the vehicle. O
But, someone is going to end up with a beautiful little house in the right situation.

The only thing I don’t see is, well, much of a living area, especially for a home that officially sleeps 4. But the kitchen is definitely workable, and the closet space is more than I have in a 970 square foot apartment (on the Jersey end of the Outerbridge Crossing from Staten Island)! Gotta love a Greyhound.

Each of these rebuilt busses are unique to the builder’s personality. I have always liked the concept of; rebuild, reuse, reduce. Keeping things out of the landfill is important.

It’s so funny reading the comments about how $125 grand could have gotten her so much more. Not in Manhattan, where she lives, it wouldn’t. The cost of housing is relative to where you live. $125K in CA or any major urban area of the country is peanuts compared to what you’d pay to purchase a home. You wouldn’t be able to buy the tiniest condo in CA for that much.

It’s a lovely reno. A bit white, but that just means you have a nice base coat t

This appears to be the same bus that is in the story above about a vacation stay rental. Which is it, for sale as per this story or a vacation rental??

  • Rhino

She was taken by the “professionals” and $55K in extras? It is a 1966 GMC… You can get a 1990’s Prevost conversion in the 50k range.

Beautifully done! I’d live in this bus conversion in a NY Minute! I’d add solar and try to make it as off grid as possible.

I have never seen that much closet space in anything other than a large house. I would rather have a living room. But I too thought that was a extremely high price.
