This would be good for things like plant pots and garden tools that could withstand winters.

I’m with you. The first thing I thought of was bags of potting soil, spade, pots.

Wow! What a great idea! Dog leashes, rubber boots, gardening tools, bird sees, the list is endless. Thanks for showing this to us!

Handy dandy but I have one word – spiders. Check your shoes before you put them on! Would work well in hot dry weather but not so good for rainy or cold weather. The shoes would be damp and cold and icky to put on. Lots of other things could be put in there though.

So funny Alice… I thought the same thing about shoes outside! I check my shoes if they’ve been sitting for awhile INSIDE! I’d use my cool stairs for lots of amazing outdoor storage though so I still think they’re just super. Had to laugh that we are psychic twins on the spider thing!

Ah yes, I do that too, also shake out my clothes and never leave any lying on the floor. That’s just the way it is here in spider country, among the lush vegetation of the Pacific NW. Especially during fall spider migration. I often leave a moderate sprinkling of baby powder in my shoes, grosses out spiders and mice too. I also made a spray with 1 quart water, 5 drops dish soap, 10 drops tea tree oil and a bit of lavender oil that I use around the doors and windows and along the edges of the floor. You need to spray at least once a week. Doesn’t keep them all out but definitely helps. Smells nice too.

Try some diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle wherever you don’t want bugs. You can even buy food-grade DE and use around food supplies. Bugs will die after coming in contact with it. It is not poisonous to humans, however.

To keep insects out of your shoes, rubbers or boots, use plastic bags. You could keep a rag in the storage space and wipe the shoes down before bagging them.

Love the idea of the storage, but not for shoes…. maybe for small garden tools or something like that. Wish we could see this whole house inside….. it looks great on the outside!

Those shoes in the outdoor stair storage will make great nesting places for mice.

Just a thought, for some of us that don’t lift our feet so well these may be a tripping hazard if they don’t have some mechanism to keep them firmly closed.

Maybe line the inside of the stairs with Cedar to help reduce “smells” 😉 and help a bit with critter control. Cheap, effective & environmentally friendly…

Great idea, just add a bit a cedar for critters and a bit of borax rather than dish soap and more critters will be rejected. Maybe just line the lids with some mosquito netting and call it a day 🙂 A thought for those who are having difficulty stepping up, might make a ramp that opens with storage underneath rather than stairs?
