From Prison to Affordable Tiny House Builder: Holy Ground Real Estate

Matt was in prison for fraud, angry at the people who put him there when he got on his knees and begged God to help him. He says his life changed right there, and he had all these ideas flood into his mind of ways to help others — one of those was to build affordable tiny homes to sell and raise money to fund the “Rescue Ranch” — a 5-acre working ranch in Colorado to help facilitate men and women with addiction problems to get clean.

Today, those ideas have become a reality with Holy Ground Real Estate. The charity offers 12, 16 & 20 ft. tiny homes, hand made to order and ready in January 2021. The 20 ft. home is just under $20,000, while the 16 ft. is $16,500, and the 12 ft. is $12,500 — talk about affordable tiny homes!

Super story!! Excellent plans with the ranch. Well thought out THOWS.
I had a thought while looking at the staircase going up to the loft.
How hard would it be to have the bottom 2 or 3 steps become a comfy seat also by flipping the treads over etc.
One tread flip up for a seat back. some sort of arrangement anyway to add another place to sit. Looking at the window beside the steps, maybe a flip out desk along with the stair seat would give a nice spot for a computer desk or a work station in the kitchen to prep veggies etc.

Absolutely agree. I had bad experience with them last summer and posted a Google review. If you look at BBB in CO under “Revelations in Christ Ministries” you’ll see a lot. It appears to be a Ponzi scheme and Matt (owner) essentially confirmed this with a recent response. He can only issue refunds in certain time periods (ie, he needs new money to refund old money). I’m thankful I got my money refunded but would never recommend this “non-profit” unless you have money and time to burn. Best wishes to all who are waiting.

In January 2021, I signed a contract for a TH build with Holy Ground Real Estate and told it should be ready in July (postponed from June and paid in full since April). I am very concerned about the recent negative reviews but Matt has assured me it will be built soon. I would love to hear others experiences because there is actually very little online. Since I’ve paid in full, all I can do is wait, hope, and pray!

Although this individual presents as a changed man. Nothing could be further from the truth. He is running a ponzi scheme at that place. Try to find anyone who has received the tiny home they’ve paid for. The few you might locate will have much to say! There is no ministry or charity. Mr.Sowash is a con man with a new game, nothing more. Investigations have begun and several lawsuits have been filed. Do your due diligence. You’ll easily discover for yourself that to which I am referring. I resigned my position with Holy Ground Real Estate, along with several others who were employed there, last week upon discovering that what many of us had begun suspect was, in fact, reality. Countless clients showing up looking for Matt to demand their houses, police showing up asking questions, city safety inspectors arriving etc etc etc. Mr.Sowash physically hiding on-site from many of these people and verbally attacking others! Yes, I’m taking this whistleblower role because I have to be able to live with myself. Make no mistake about it. This is a full-on scam!

Will you please contact me about these guys? I just got taken by them and need to understand who I am dealing with. Matt just shouted at me telling me he was sick of people like me… I paid for a house and it’s four months or more late.
He is not offering a full refund until he builds and sells the house I paid for. Please help

Holy Ground Real Estate is working on my home as I write this (06/24/21). My house should be ready in early July and I have been receiving pictures daily of the progress. For anyone having communication issues which I did for a few months, they recently hired a new admin who is excellent. I would contact Matthew or Cecelia if anyone is having problems.

Update: In Jan 2021, I signed a contract for a 8×20 tiny house. After numerous delays, the house was mostly “finished” in July 2021. A 3rd party home inspection revealed major and minor issues from structural to cosmetic so I opted to have Matt resale my TH. To Matt’s credit, he sold the home and refunded my money within a week. Nonetheless, I wasted a lot of time, energy, and money on a TH that was not to my satisfaction or construction standards. Furthermore, I did not feel valued as a customer. For example, their communications were subpar, their progress updates were misleading, they made design changes without my consultation, and they chose not to include paid upgrades and did not inform me until the build was almost complete. Therefore, I do not recommend tiny homes built by Holy Ground Real Estate.

Thanks for the update – Are you able to elaborate on the major and minor issues?

  • Shannon C
    August 4, 2021, 10:47 am

The breaker box was wired incorrectly, gas line installed wrong, issues with door & windows, and various cosmetic damages. The home inspector commented a few times that it did not seem that work was done by licensed contractor as indicated by Holy Ground Real Estate.

Was about to make the leap and came across this lifesaver – does anyone have any updates??

      August 12, 2021, 3:50 pm

I posted my recent experience above. Over the course of 7 months, I saw several of their homes up for immediate resale on Facebook and several people who did not believe their houses were constructed well. Also, I find it odd that if they’ve built over 100 houses, why aren’t there more reviews? Finally, I tried diligently to find independent evidence of the charities he is promoting on his website but found nothing. Be careful and check out reviews on the CO BBB “Revelations for Christ Ministries”!

That is all very concerning….did you pay cash? Did you ever get a chance to visit in person and see the immediate for sale homes in person? To be fair, I don’t see any tiny home reviews for any builders, really… it’s been very hard to know what’s good just searching on my own. The resale market is a joke and full of DIY projects without papers for 40-45k minimum for used, janky builds. I checked out what you mentioned and as far as the other side projects my main concern right now is receiving safe and livable units…fingers crossed all turns out well and they’ve stepped up how yhey do business. My contractor gave the OK based on what he knew of them….

          August 13, 2021, 9:03 am

I paid nearly $13k down and paid rest within 2 months. I actually find established tiny house builders have many reviews. Getting insurance is hard enough without the issues discovered during my home inspection for me to risk taking ownership. Finally, his homes aren’t certified. They’ve been working on that for a while. I hope you get a good product. It wasn’t right for me and I’m glad Matt refunded my money.

      • Concerned Citizen
        August 24, 2021, 9:02 pm

Shannon you were right on the money – total scam…excuses, runaround, and flat out lies. Matt is unrepentant and I am so relieved I paid with my card, asked questions, and didn’t help fund a fraudster’s lifestyle. I never even got a contract and no work was done in weeks that he claimed he was going to do. I believe your reviews and the ones before me saved me from being left with shoddy work or worse yet, no houses at all (I was going to order 3!). I got a refund and no explanation but he’s right there on Google making up stories trying to cover his tail. It really irritates me how some people continue to get away with ripping people off.

To echo what Shannon, Liam, and Nina have already said: don’t walk, run, from these scammers. They are not certified, they will try and pressure you like a used car salesman to hurry up and buy before the price goes up on houses (by their own admission) that have been sitting unsold and passed up for most of the year.

They have zero paperwork, and when seriously pressed for basic answers like “what brand and model are you using” for materials they will finally admit to names that a quick Google search will show to be notoriously subpar and having no longevity.

They wasted my time, and tied up my money, when I said I would not pay more until I had something in writing of what they’ve done. I asked what the warranty was on parts and labor, and wanted to see progress photos. Nothing out of the ordinary or demanding. Again, keep in mind these are supposedly already made structures that I just wanted a tub installed and a wood burning stove.

The excuses and lies started flowing: a tub allegedly came cracked (no photo evidence to back this up) so that was out of his control, he needed time with his son before school (what happened to all the other workers?), no mention of the stoves again that were supposed to be in stock. The owner is a gaslighting, question dodging, shady convict. He kept trying to say this is how business is done, but as a small business owner myself, it doesn’t pass the sniff test.

Always ask questions, get things in writing, and don’t be afraid to push for answers – whatever is going on with this so-called charity isn’t professional. If you want quality and peace of mind, go somewhere else. It even took a week for payments to clear because nobody trusts them with money, and rightfully so considering his past.

After much back and forth I abruptly saw a refund notice for half of what I’ve paid and an email from the owner asking to give me a call. I let him know he could send an email as he has been doing since I’m not available for calls and never heard from him. Incredible. He left me high and dry but I’m honestly relieved because it was becoming more apparent he probably wouldn’t be able to deliver anything at all, let alone 3 houses as discussed.

No contract, no photos, no schematics, no spec sheets until forced, and then it was full of typos and still missing basic information. It’s truly a shame that the market has fly-by-night people like this taking advantage of those in need and hiding behind charities to do so.

It’s equivalent of someone building a car from scraps in their garage and selling it to you and you take the risk of having no paperwork, not knowing what they did, and them telling you “well if you’ve done your research you’d know we’re cheaper than anything else on the market.” Yes, you are because you don’t have any backing behind what you make!

House hunter beware- where there is smoke, there’s fire, and these fraudsters are a blazing inferno.

Completely agree. If one reads the responses from Matt (owner) to the 10 BBB complaints, he admits that he must sell new homes in order to refund previous buyers. Sounds like a Ponzi scheme or at the very least musical chairs. If he goes bankrupt or fails to secure new buyers, people will be left without a house or return of their funds. I feel fortunate I received my money back but that was a year ago and I still see bad reviews about people not receiving their home or refund. Most of positive Google reviews are people who have NOT purchased a home or have a received a free home. Proceed with great caution when dealing with this organization.
