Farm Life in An Industrial Off-Grid Shipping Container Home

Jennifer purchased 42 acres on the Fleurieu Peninsula in Australia back in 2016. At the time it was a complete blank slate, and she’s added paddocks, a rainwater catchment system, a solar array, a vegetable garden, trees and her amazing industrial shipping container home!

She even went so far as to get her home and alternative systems completely “council-approved,” meaning they meet the local building regulations and she shouldn’t have any headaches regarding her property. She owns all kinds of animals including horses, sheep, goats and alpacas.

On her blog, Tiny House Sustainable Living, she’s writing weekly updates about her journey: From dealing with the council to choosing her design to stewarding her property and animals. There’s so much we can learn from her, but first, enjoy the tour of her tiny home!

She Turned An Industrial Shipping Container Into A Farmhouse Cottage!

Her kitchen includes a larger refrigerator, convection oven, and stove top.

A roll-away island is the way to go in a little kitchen. I have one and use it all the time for more counter space.

Here’s her four-burner cooktop and a modern range hood.

The wood-burning stove keeps her place toasty.

She also has a mini-split system for heating & cooling.

Here’s her couch and work station.

The bathroom has a washer and dryer unit, along with with a rainwater shower head!

I’m partial to the pipe-and-wood shelving because I put it in my own home!

Here’s the first bedroom.

Lots of lovely horse decor and some built-in storage.

And here is room #2 with red accents.

A glimpse of her rainwater catchment system and her solar array.

Those large windows really help open the place up.

Industrial decor is a perfect complement to shipping containers.

Sheep! Just because they’re cute.

Could you live here?

Overall a nice place but having the stove inches from the telly is a very bad idea and she must be quite tall or keep a ladder tucked away in the bath to reach the washer or dryer controls.

It can be a very bad idea but depends on the setup and type of wood stove… Some only require a few inches of clearance to be safe and can have most of the heat re-directed or channeled. For example, some can have a heat exchanger installed that channels the majority of the heat to something else like heating house water or to a radiant heated floor system or just vents it to allow using the stove in warmer seasons. Heat reflectors and protective features like that metal mesh around the flue pipe can significant improve the safety of the stove and help channel most of the heat up, which would make it more of a problem for the Mini-Split above the TV…

But it’s easy enough to add a heat shield between just to be sure, though… and would help if you need to place a kettle of water on the stove to counter the dry heat effect if the homes air gets too dry during use…

While I agree about the dryer controls but there are units with remote controls or you could install an after market kit to place controls in a more convenient location… Though, some may have issues just having the dryer that high and would either require a step stool or placing the dryer lower…

I love the way you have set up inside and made it all work. Such a good set up for the perfect location.
Especially the touch on the outside of the container with the timber trim. Most impressed.
