Family’s Debt-Free Cob Home Took 10 Years of Planning!

This post contains affiliate links.

When Danny and Katherine first learned about cob building, they were hooked! But they couldn’t jump right in due to a number of circumstances. Eventually, they were able to build a “trial” cob tiny home on her parents’ property, where they lived for a few years while saving and planning for their forever home on their own property which they own outright!

They’ve been in this 700-800 square foot cob dwelling now for a couple of years, and the lack of debt allows Katherine to stay home with her daughter. The house is absolutely stunning inside, with all kinds of details they spent a decade planning out “just right.” They even used all recycled windows to keep costs down and to be more sustainable.

Jenna at Tiny House Giant Journey did a great video tour with the couple which you can watch below, where you’ll even learn a bit about cob building. And if you really want to delve in, Danny and Katherine teach cob-building classes!

Seems this type of building would be a great type of “barn raising” type of project for a group – great well thought out home – is the heating adequate in the winter?

Well, they do call it the Epic Heating system ;-p

Seriously, though, that’s a thermal mass rocket stove… They can put out a ton of heat and continue to radiate heat up to several hours later…

While the Cob house, itself, is basically all thermal mass as well… So helps regulate temperature in both summer and winter… Just like other earthen structures like Earthships, etc.

I was a stay at home mother so I appreciate how you are at home with your precious one. The place is beautiful. Inspiring. Keep up the good work! Hopefully some day not too long into the future I will join you in building a cob home.

Absolutely brilliant! Love the soft toned colors both inside and outside. Well done! You must be proud of your accomplishment, even if it took 10 years. Well done!
