Meet Earthship Ironbank: The first building-code-approved Earthship in Australia!

Martin & Zoe, along with a team of 60 volunteers, constructed this eco-friendly home inspired by the work of Mark Reynolds, who started the “Earthship” movement (lLearn more about Earthship architecture here). Martin went through the trouble of getting it “council-approved” by the building authorities in Australia, to show that it could be done. This is a 750 square-foot structure built primarily from recycled tires filled with earth, and coated in cement. You’ll notice stunning recycled bottle walls all over the home. You can book a tour of the Earthship, or better yet, you can vacation there via Airbnb!

The kitchen area includes a lovely wood-burning stove.

They harvested 100 bananas from these palms one winter! Wow!

Here’s the utility room and second bedroom area. The closets are filled with the solar batteries.

Look at how beautiful this bottle wall in the shower is.

The video was long but worth watching. Clever natural air conditioning system. I love the bottle walls.

Nicely done! We all need to be more open-minded about our housing and the materials used to build. I think I would have chosen a Murphy bed that has a sofa to improve the “living” area’s function. I would also be tempted to have the table and chairs by the window so I would have a view when eating or doing art. Everyone has their personal preferences and this floor plan may work perfectly for the owners…just suggesting an alternative. I wonder if it would be easy to add a room or two in the future?

Earth based structures are very labor intensive, both building them and modifying them, but otherwise it can be done…
