Drew’s Solar Tiny Home

This post contains affiliate links.

This one-of-a-kind Cedar and metal tiny home was built by Drew, a creative and driven designer with a passion for sustainable living in style. Most of the materials were reclaimed from a variety of resources and recycled into ideal use. It’s fully solar-powered by a 1200 watt Renogy system, three 170 amp-hour Lithium Iron batteries, and a 3000-watt inverter/charger.

The interior is laid out like a luxury suite with healthy plants adorning the walls, operatable skylights to brighten the space, and custom artwork for a unique touch. The functional bathroom holds a toilet and full shower with a high-efficiency head and dampener valve. The kitchen has abundant storage with an induction cooktop and built-in wall oven aside from a gorgeous 24×48 tile for the backsplash.

The most outstanding feature of this DIY build is the seamless drop-down deck and fold-out awning. Drew can have a beautiful porch with shaded seats and endless views in a matter of minutes!

    I enjoyed the video of your house. I ❤️ it. There is so much to say about it, the use of reclaimed wood , the smart solutions to storage , the simplicity of its design. You absolutely thought about every detail. This is one of the best I’ve seen. Thank you for sharing.🤟🏼

    What a unique and creative THOW! I love the different aged woods , and your Mom’s artwork! I love the antler by the door. There actually is a fair amount of storage for books and things in the living area, but I am wondering for what purpose you are using the sofa? Water tanks? Where do you eat? At the counter where you can pull out the 2 food storage units? How have you insulated the house for winter in CO? And how about heating and cooling? I am impressed with the hanging space on the side wall of the bedroom and behind the headboard. Your deck and shade, and the shade over the front door are great looking. Your command of solar power for this house is stunning. I have never heard of the batteries you mentioned. Congratulations on a great little house!

      Some information on his official website, answers at least the insulation question… Silicon sealed all the seams of the sheathing to provide better air sealing and used 1/2″ rigid foam insulation in the walls… Skylight can be opened for passive cooling, along with interior fans but looks to be about it… Along with the fold down wall deck that opens the interior to the outdoors, it doesn’t look like it’s really meant for winter… But it’s small and light enough to be fairly easily moved.

      May be more intended just to take to tiny house shows, festivals, etc. as he’s offering his services as a builder… While the 2 Tiny House Nation Episodes he worked on was Season 3, Ep 4. “400 Sq. Ft. Wine Tasting House”, and Ep 17. “300 Sq. Ft. Poker Night House” for other examples of his work, and he posted some of his other commercial work projects on his website as well, as he does more than Tiny Houses…

        Hi again James. I did not have the time to check his website or Instagram. So thanks for the info on the 1/2 “ insulation. I hope Drew will still answer me with regard to his use of the sofa dead space, or where the water tanks are.

        re — insulation
        2003, starting inside the interior walls and ceiling, we layered our ExpeditionVehicle with:
        * half-inch adhesive acoustic insulation, then
        * one-inch pink-board, then
        * two-inch foil-sided rigid.
        .
        re — silicone caulk
        On the rough logger tracks to remote mountain lakes and across deserts to the isolated Baja beaches we prefer, we discovered silicone caulk hardens and cracks/pulls apart as components shift slightly.
        Accordingly, we use Vulcum 116 for our windows and around the rear wall I built.
        Nearly two decades full-time live-aboard, our Vulcum 116 is soft and pliable.
        .
        re — holes in the roof
        We think that is an invitation for rain to explore an ‘amusing’ relationship with gravity.

    Wow! If I were looking for someone to help and design a similar space — I would call him!!! I love how unique this home is. I loved the reclaimed wood — the super storage ideas and the place for plants!! How about being able to drain dishes above the sink and into same!! The outside deck is swell — the movability of this home is good. I also loved the lovely Cherry Blossom designs in the bathroom (thanks to the mom)! How about pulling the food storage units out so one can sit on them to use while at the sink!!! Every part of this home was well thought out and the gorgeous use of reclaimed wood (even on a common slider) was very cool. The only think I wasn’t fond of was hanging clothes (that needed hanging) on the rod next to the bed — however there is the space behind the headboard of the bed and if one doesn’t need lots of hanging clothes space — would work well. Also, I assume the ladder over the couch is used to access the loft?(If I missed something here — apologies)
    I also agree also with another comment — that I wonder if there is a table or someplace that could be used as a place to dine. Otherwise — Drew is unbelievably smart and obviously dedicated to his art!! Bravo!!!

    I am interested in complete off-grid living so the information on solar is helpful. However, does anybody know if that system would be enough to run a well pump? Is there anybody out there with information/experience on the use and reliability of solar well pumps? I have a 52 acre property, but the local electric cooperative wants $35K to hook up to the grid. So, solar it will need to be. I hope someone can help me!

      Thirty five thousand to “hook up” to the grid? Highway robbery unless the connection is m-i-l-e-s away and they have to run cables across miles of ground to the connection.

    When the deck is set up, is there a way to keep bugs/critters out? Screen curtain or ?

      The curtains appear to be it. Maybe they don’t bother him, or anybody. Just surmising coz I don’t know. I live in NZ where we a blessed with very few of the things the inhabit North America.
