Detachable Micro Cabin Motorhome: Haaks Opperland Campervan

It’s always fun to find something completely different, and that’s what you get with the Haaks Opperland campervan. This is actually an itty-bitty two-story cabin that sits on the bed of a compact Fiat flatbed truck.

Simply drive the home to your location and drop it off. The 13-foot-long building then pops open, and the truck is free to drive wherever you need to go!

I’ll confess up front: It’s not even remotely affordable at more than $140,000 (especially since you’d have to ship it overseas — it’s built by a Dutch company), but the idea is brilliant and maybe it’ll catch on!

The space is tight, of course, but they manage to fit in the major necessities!

There’s even a toilet, which you can see in the floorplan below.

The door flips open to allow the outside, in, and provide the illusion of more space.

Here it is in transport! So cool. Watch the video below to see it transform.

Now that is something that needs to be copied (for a much lower price) I love that it even has a bathroom. Not much water storage though. And does it have solar?

Clever design. I like how all the windows are covered when the roof is down; good security while on the road or in storage. This would be a good plan for a backwoods getaway cabin. I wonder how heavy it is, and how well insulated. I see on their website that they have a larger version, the Nano House, and they tout “All season comfort,” but I can’t read the rest. Can one raise the roof by hand?

Hello Alison, translation of the site doesn’t show much more details but it’s listed as weighing 3050 kilos (~3.36 tons or 6,724 lbs) but that seems to include the vehicle.

The Angled Nano Houses don’t include a vehicle and have two models, the Berk (400 × 220) and the Willow (600 × 300). The smaller Berk is meant for two people and the larger Willow is meant for 5 and they give the weight of that one as starting at <2000 kg (2.2 tons or 4409 lbs). They appear to be meant to be left at a site but indicate that they offer the option to put them on a mobile platform to make them easy to move.

While it says its insulated, they give no specifics and I would imagine they only mean well insulated for a camper…

A detachable camper module has actually been featured on this website before, back in 2012. Very different inside design, but same overall detachable concept. https://tinyhousetalk.com/detachable-motorhome-fieldsleeper/

I’ve thought about building a detachable camper for the back of my F350 flatbed and that raise-up roof is a pretty nifty idea to gain some room. I’m not keen on canvas pop-up walls, so those hard sidewalls on the lift-up section are pretty intriguing.

Ah I wasn’t around back then, but thanks for finding that! Very cool.

Yes, there’s been a number of similar examples. The unique thing about this one is the vehicle is part of it and is designed to dock with it instead of just sitting on a flatbed/platform or nestling into a truck bed. Allowing it to have a lower height that makes getting around a little easier and more ideal for European roads… Notice that the sides of the cabin cover up the wheel wells, for example, when docked…

Anyway, fold out designs pre-dates slide outs but fell out of favor because it’s easier to use a motorized slide out instead, despite the higher cost, but there’s still some innovations to make note of and potential game changers that could make them more prevalent again…

A failed but interesting attempt by a company called Ragsdale Tiny Homes issued a number of CG animation videos of their concept tiny home with folding designs. They seem to have lasted from 2014-2017 but you can still find their youtube page to look at those videos for ideas…

While a still growing company in the UK is called Ten Fold Engineering, they patented a folding technology that they license out to other companies and their youtube page has quite a lot of CG animated videos, along with at least one prototype demonstration, showing how their technology can be applied to a wide number of things, including tiny homes…

A lot of times these ideas just need financial backing to bring them to market and that appears to be the hardest part, but the technology exists to now make them more useful than slide outs or pop-ups, and that could eventually change everything…
