Custom Built Truck Bed Micro Camper that Fits Toyota Tacoma

This post contains affiliate links.

This micro camper fits on the truck of many small trucks. The owner of this one used her Toyota Tacoma to carry it.

She calls it the NapCamper. It’s like a modern version of a gypsy wagon, don’t you think?

It’s a great way to travel because you’re not hauling a huge amount of weight so gas isn’t too expensive.

By the way, Cathy, the owner, is putting it up for sale in case you’re interested. Let me pass it on to her so she can tell you a little bit about it. Afterwards, feel free to ask your questions about it in the comments. Here’s Cathy…

Here are some photos of the “NapCamper” as I call it. I know there will be questions about its exact size and other details. I can answer those later. I’m at work now. Some basics:

1. The camper fits a small truck, like a Toyota Tacoma, which is what I carried it on. My Toyota is a gutless truck, and it had no trouble with the camper.

2. The camper was built by a boat-builder about 20 years ago. I don’t know him, but he did a great job!

3. Headspace is about 6 feet and width is also about 6 feet.

4. Footpump sink with a 5 gallon water tank.

5. There are 3 drawers, some kitchen space, and a small closet for storage.

6. There’s additional storage under the seats and above the wheel wells.

7. The micro camper sleeps two. The top bunk slides out and the seat can also be converted into a bed.

8. You can pull out a small fold-out table and there’s even more space under the counter for storage.

9. Side windows do not open but the front and back ones do open and have screen to keep the bugs out.

10. It already has an electrical hook up for RV parks.

11. Custom paint and a sewn interior was completed by me just last year 🙂

Where is it and how much?

    • June 10, 2012, 6:16 pm

Hey Nancy, here’s some information I was able to get for you from the owner where she talked about it on our Facebook Page (http://facebook.com/tinyhousetalk)

I’m in Bellingham, Washington (about 90 miles north of Seattle). I travel to Seattle pretty regularly. The camper was built by a boat-builder I don’t know, but the interior ribs appear to have been cut to fit. When I was refurbishing it in my driveway, a previous owner saw it and said she thought it was about 30 years old. It doesn’t leak or anything–the windows are sealed with epoxy and the roof is fiberglass (I think).

Is this camper still available? How much are you asking for it?

    • June 10, 2012, 6:17 pm

Hi Bryan, I believe it is still available but she hasn’t come up with a price yet, maybe she is waiting for offers I think. Thanks!

I am working on a concept idea like that in LA, as school and work just will not meet the demand for housing. My idea is similar but built for a Sport Trac instead! Instead of standing, my 6′ self will have to deal with being able to sit up. There will be no facilities or anything but right now I am in a van and my truck sits too often. Going down to one vehicle with gas, parking, and insurance in So Cal has its own rewards!

But its cheaper than dropping $10,000 plus a year for housing, of which I plan to save up for my first real tiny home. This thing is a challenge due to the lift of my truck, weight and center of gravity, and materials, but I am shooting for a more “hip-area” friendly design of miniature-modern implications, in a sense a work of art as well as a home. It really is all I need for the next couple of years…

Very nice camper but it is on the northwest coast. Here in the southeastern U.S. we don’t see custom campers for small trucks like the S10,Colorado or Tacoma. I also like the Vargo style as well. Maybe the tiny home concept will catch on down here and we’ll see more cabanas, truck campers and pull behind.

    • June 10, 2012, 6:19 pm

I hope it catches on too Carl, and I think that it is! If there’s enough demand, I’m sure we’ll eventually see creative people/companies offering them for sale.

looking at that camper makes me regret selling my Nissan hard body pickup. I think it would be great for it. It looks really nice.

    • June 10, 2012, 6:20 pm

I love those older Nissan and Toyota trucks, nearly indestructible. Thanks Tom!

This is cool! A small house in your small truck. They can improve the color, but it’s very creative.

I have always been enchanted with the gypsy life style. Being a short person, I would find it challenging to hide-away in this place. What kind of stairs did she use?

Could a larger version of this truck camper be built to go in a 8 ft. bed3500 Dodge Ram? Your thought’s and thanks a bunch! Rooster

Where did you have this shell made. I have a Toyota Tacoma with full sized bed and want to get a camper unit to set up a mobile painting studio in. I would want to put windows so that I could stand in the back of the camper and paint. The interior would have to be customized to accomodate storage of canvases and paint supplies. Would want an over the cab sleeping unit also. I am in Taos, New Mexico.

Do you know how much it weighs? I’m building one that is a similar size for my tacoma but I am unsure of the weight.
