I have nothing but the most GLOWING of comments about this place!!! When can I stay here? LOL

I’ve never seen a floor plan like this where the bedroom was located on the lower level and the main living area on the top…intriguing concept!

What sealed the deal on the Charm Factor was the photo that showed the wee Christmas Tree decorated sublimely with golden orbs.

I realize that this is a rental and that may account for the lack of carpets. If this were my personal home, not shared with strangers, I’d have a massive Oriental Rug in the kitchen, to contrast against the pure white.

Absolutely NOTHING negative to say about this place, whatsoever!

@Cahow: “a massive Oriental rug in the kitchen.” You are joking, right?

      • Cahow
        February 23, 2015, 4:20 pm

Nope. No joke. I’ve had an authentic Oriental rug in every room of our homes, including kitchen and bath! We aren’t the kind of people who spill things; just saying. 😀

At least with a rug, you can yearly have it cleaned by a professional and rotate it for wear, which you can’t do with Wall to Wall carpeting.

          February 23, 2015, 6:29 pm

No matter how little you spill in the kitchen Cahow, I’m quite sure that by the time you do your suggested yearly refresh you will be able to draw a nice soup from that carpet, unless of course you don’t do much cooking and only live on peanut-butter sandwiches or take-out! As for having (a) carpet in a humidity rich environment like a bathroom, no thank you, but maybe that’s just me. Cheers!

Viva la difference, Duke. Among my friends, 100% of us have Oriental carpets in every room. Maybe it’s an Urban thang or a Lincoln Park thang. However, no Health Department has come to either quarantine or post a CONDEMNED notice upon our door…yet. LOL Oh, and I make 3 meals a day…from scratch!

I guess it’s like Dog Kisses on the Mouth or allowing dogs/cats to sleep in bed with you: Some people would have your reaction and other’s would embrace it!

Oriental rug–splendid idea! They wear like iron, feel wonderful underfoot and don’t show dirt (not that you would have any!). Altogether a magical little dwelling…

Dear Maureen: thanks for being *bold* enough to be part of the minuscule “Oriental Rug Lover’s Brigade!” LOL

Yes!, they DO wear like iron if properly loved and cared for; the massive one we have in our combo dining room/lounge is over 85 years old; it was my Grandparent’s that they had in their parlour. The room is 15′ x 15′, the rug is 12′ x 12′ so only a border of hardwood floor peeps out. Four times a year we rotate it for wear and at the start of Winter we haul the bugger to the rug cleaner for a proper cleaning and re-blocking. We’re passing it on to our adult daughter; we have a bountiful amount of the rugs for all three “kids” to enjoy. 😀

Like I said Cahow, a good yearly soup from your kitchen carpet is nothing to sneeze at. Bon appétit!

I love the look and feel if carpeting however it just doesn’t make much sense this day and age to have carpeting of any large size in a home. (Nothing over what you cannot toss on a washing machine.) Carpeting maintains so much dirt, dust and allergens; not to mention the things we spill on or grind into it. Ewwww. I’m a germaphobe so I guess that could be just me too. 🙂

        • Cahow
          February 23, 2015, 9:21 pm

          I’ve never met a germ I didn’t like! LOL

I guarantee, Lynnette, you wouldn’t last a day at our job site! 17 sweat and grime covered men, doing what sweat and grime covered men do…;)

        • Sally
          February 23, 2015, 9:56 pm

If it’s on the bottom of your shoes or feet, it winds up on what you’re walking on. Germs do not care if its carpet or wood, Lynette, altho I do like the image of big purple bacteria eyes checking out the polyester :-). Working in a hospital created quite an awareness, which is why we’d take off our shoes before we got in the car to go home. My work shoes never went in my house.
However, I now live on a farm and…well…I’m betting Cahow’s Oriental rug is more appetizing than my linoleum.
Oh, a word to innocent Duke — don’t say “kitchen” around Cahow, rumor has it she sleeps in hers.

No one enters past 3ft into the house with their shoes on. Agreed 100%. However me and my trusty mop bucket, mop and mix of hot water and a bit of bleach will cure whatever ails that linoleum 😀

          Dearest Sally,
Please post your address so that I may send you the bill for bringing my laptop into my Tech Guy tomorrow to clean the key board of vanilla yogurt. After reading your artful comment, I laugh-spewed a spray of yogurt all over said keyboard. Fortunately, NONE of it touched my Oriental Rug; more’s the pity as I have hear that adding yogurt to “Soup” is a grand thickening agent.

          Respectfully yours, Cahow 😉

        • Duke
          February 24, 2015, 12:17 am

Indeed germs don’t care if it’s carpet or wood, however contrary to any type of rug that is “professionally cleaned once a year” as suggested by Cahow, a ceramic- or even hardwood type flooring can easily be cleaned on a regular basis with a damp mob and some mild cleaning agent. Different folks, different strokes of course, but my sense of hygiene and practicability tells me a smooth, easily cleaned surface in both kitchen and bathroom as well as in the high traffic area of the entrance of a house is the way to go.

Not just you, Lynnette. I hate carpets, too.

Amen and pass the Diversity, please!

Funny and True Story: one of my best friends, Pat, LOVES the colour blue. Two minutes inside of her home and you can easily ascertain this fact.

One afternoon, Pat had her adult niece over with her young 5 year old daughter, Caitlyn. Caitlyn had never been in her Great Aunt’s house. She came inside with her All American Girl Doll, looked around and said in her most Tim Gunn voice, “Auntie Pat, you have TOO MUCH BLUE IN THIS HOUSE!”

OMG, we just roared and roared at this mini-critic challenging her Auntie’s decorating style! LOL That was 15 years ago and we still all laugh about it. I guess even from birth, we all display preferences in our domiciles. 😀

          February 24, 2015, 2:08 pm

That is too funny! this puts me in mind of my very first home I ever purchased. Blue. Blue. Blue. Lol the inside was totally painted blue. one shade for the walls, one shade for the baseboards, and even a blue toilet and a blue bathtub lol. To make matters even worse, the outside of the house was painted, yes you guessed it, blue!

        • Cahow
          February 24, 2015, 7:34 pm

I adore blue, Lynette, and I bet that your home is gorgeous!

Since you like (liked) blue, one of Pat’s walls in her dining room was covered from top to bottom with decades of those tiny blue Christmas plates. (I don’t know what company makes them.) Your jaw dropped when you viewed them and beheld their beauty and the commitment it took to remember to buy a plate each year. I’ll never forget how gorgeous it looks in both daylight and candlelight. <3

lynette, I agree with you. I do have an 8 by 10 sisal which is currently in a box because I have had pups and I do not want it chewed. I buy area rugs that can be taken outside and HOSED down. I have one old, very large very thick chinese wool rug. this is only because of sentimentality, not practicality. Practically, it is to only use the fibers and sizes that can be machine washed or hung on the fence and hosed.

  • February 23, 2015, 12:51 pm

This is absolutely gorgeous! It’s warm and cozy but gives a feeling of spaciousness. I could happily live in this full-time (especially in Cornwall)! Really nice one.

So beautiful! I’d sleep on a daybed up top and make that bedroom into a sewing studio. Amazingly light and spacious inside. The only thing that might drive me a bit bonkers is not having any huge windows. After many years in various places with crummy windows I really crave big windows with wide vistas.

Lovely small place. Have seen many upside down houses in areas with nice views. The pictures leave some confusion. In one shot, the beams are stained wood. In the others they are painted white. Is this the same place? Renovation? I’m soon to build a similar size cottage and would like to know the dimensions. Thanks!

    • Cahow
      February 24, 2015, 1:07 pm

GREAT catch, hanna, regarding the beams! I’m guessing that the wooden beam photos show the home after remodeling and the white beams are a result of the owners wanting the large room to look even more spacious without the exposed timber-frame roof beams calling one’s attention to them. It’s easy to go from wood to painted; NOT so easy for the reverse to happen.

Two bits of info from the site: “Lofty is a contemporary loft conversion of an 15th century Grade II-listed granite barn.” and they welcome “Babes-in-Arms”, only. SO sweet!

I’ve noticed with many of these booking sites that you can NOT gain access to pricing unless you register. NOT COOL! I don’t need to give my email address away to sites that will bombard me with MORE mailings. Don’t make future customer’s jump through hoops to find out if they can afford your prices! Imagine wanting to visit a new restaurant, looking at the menu either on-line or in their window and NOT finding a single price until you “register” with them. Pffffffft…

Cornwall is our favorite place in the world!!!! Have to stay here some day . . .May refuse to leave . . .

I’m sure your rugs are beautiful, Cahow, and shouldn’t be a problem for those of us who leave our shoes at the door. Kitchen spills usually disappear with a little cold water, so hooray for you!

    • Cahow
      February 24, 2015, 12:15 pm

Thanks, Karen R.! <3 Yes, my rugs are gorgeous and well-maintained! Hoovered daily, rotated against wear and as I mentioned earlier, brought to a professional company once a year for deep cleaning and any repairs.

I was brought up with hard wood floors and area rugs on the farm, and like SO many others have posted HERE, we are a very strict NO SHOES ALLOWED IN THE HOUSE!!!! We're very lucky in that we have a breezeway where shoes and boots can be shucked off and a quick step inside the kitchen has our slippers waiting for us. We warn new guests, in advance, about our policy so that they aren't taken unaware.

As an architect, meaning that I work outside, (and having grown up on a dairy farm) I'm only TOO aware of what our shoes trod upon! Working in the city, as I do, if "it can come out of a human body", I've seen it on the sidewalk! I won't elaborate because of the utter gross out factor but I've witnessed people step directly onto things that could be labeled "Bio-hazard Waste!" Ewwwwwwww….

Please let us know when you permanently move into the above digs and we'll forward your mail for you. 😉

  • Karen R
    February 24, 2015, 2:40 pm

I have had (mostly family) people get angry about a request that shoes be shed. Is it not MY home? All the problems in the world are caused by people thinking they have the right to tell other people how to live . . .

    • Cahow
      February 24, 2015, 7:40 pm

Piss on ’em, Karen! You’re QUEEN of your own home and if you don’t want shoes/smoke/chewing ta-baccie/or whatever in your home, that’s your right! A cherished friend of mine is a chain smoker and can’t be awake without a smoke in her hand. She won’t come over to my house because I don’t allow her to smoke inside; I’ve told her she can go outside like my husband to smoke but that wasn’t good enough. Oh, well…I guess I’ll only visit her in her home, then.

Alex can only provide for our enjoyment what is shared with him.

If the owners of a property don’t provide floor plans, room dimensions, cost to build, architect’s names, “where to buy that frig, table, bed, washer/dryer”, then there isn’t a way for him to share it with us.

    February 25, 2015, 4:41 pm

I love the wood floors. I am planning to install 6″ pine planks just like this as soon as it warms up enough outside to cut the wood. I have 2 questions about how you did it. Did you put the floor down in the kitchen under the cabinets, or after you installed the cabinets? and, what product/s did you use to finish the wood.

    • Cahow
      February 25, 2015, 5:58 pm

Dear June, I don’t know if the “you” addressed in the question is for the home owner or not. I am NOT the home owner but an architect, so if I may, I’ll share my opinion with you.

Under almost all circumstances, the flooring goes in LAST! Why? Because flooring wears out, is replaced much faster than the cabinets are ever replaced, and the sub-flooring is much sturdier than most flooring alternatives. However, in your case, with 6″ pine planking, you can go ahead and install THAT first. Why? because unlike tile or vinyl flooring, the wood planking will probably outlast the cabinets! It will be far more cost effective to do a straight run of planking right up to the wall then having to cut all the flooring planks to the cabinets, making allowances for molding and toe kicks.

Think about how incredibly easy it will be to lay planking down in an empty room vs. having to maneuver around ALL those costly cabinets and appliances, risk scratching them and then having the sawdust and debris covering the cabinets and appliances! So, for planking, I’d highly recommend FIRST. I hope that my suggestion helps you.

I am breathless in the face of such elegant beauty and simplicity. I am too busy looking UP at all that gorgeous space to even think about carpets. What can be changed, can be changed. What we need to really look at is the design, the flow, the light, the space. Inside and out, this house is a winner.
