Couple’s European Adventure in Barry Beluga the Van

Rakel and Sigurd were teachers with a big house, but they wanted something more! So they decided to make a huge lifestyle shift and purchase a van to convert into their home.

The van has a beautiful nature and floral aesthetic, with spring green cabinets, faux plants, and leaf patterns. They have a fixed bed, micro kitchen with two burners and a sink, and an adorable Cubic Mini wood stove. How lovely!

This might be the tiniest kitchen I’ve seen!

Their flip-up table has quite the view!

They spent most of their time up North!

A little peek into their garage.

They chose to block off the cab space.

View from the snuggly bed.

They have some shoe storage right by the door.

More counter space and storage.

Snuggly pet bed!

More forals here.

During the build-out!

With some balloons.

Brilliant little phone cubby.

Their Story:

When we first decided to move in together, we bought a big house and had secure jobs as teachers. After six months of this, we figured it just didn’t feel right and the dream of the van and life on the road was born. We bought a van, Peugeot Boxer (H3, L4) , and started planning for the build. We used our free time from we bought the van in March 2022 and until it was finished in July to build it by ourselves. Building it ourselves meant many hours spent on YouTube and Instagram for inspiration and walkthroughs of different procedures. During the first few months of building our dream was to travel the Norwegian North, as that was where we met and maybe where we want to move back, but after a particulalry wet season, we decided to go South and tour Europe. So now we have lived in our van, Barry Beluga, fulltime for a month and currently our home is Carinthia, Austria. But tomorrow it might be somewhere in Slovenia. We have freedom to move around freely as we quit our teaching jobs and are now students online. The build has cost us about 12000€ and the car was about 20000€

Aaah I am so jealous! Lovely work on your van – I cannot believe you did it all alone! What a wonderful opportunity to have this to do now while you are young and have no responsibilities other than yourselves. Back in the late 60’s My then-husband and I bought and did up – much more simply than yours – a Ford panel van and went across the USA from Mass to CA. We did have a toddler and I was pregnant so our “freedom” was a bit limited, but it is one of the best times of my life! So I wish you well – enjoy every minute!
