Is it typical to rent a lot for a tiny house build as opposed to purchasing?
It’s the norm in a tiny house village, yes. You can purchase land elsewhere and put a tiny house on it, but it’s often complicated because zoning often doesn’t allow it. In a village you do have to pay for the lot rent, but you also get a guaranteed place to live without fear of the government finding out you have an “illegal” tiny house.
Being on wheels helps get around many barriers but it has it’s own issues, being treated as temporary housing being among the common ones.
There are some exceptions, but renting is the least difficult to do in most cases. Until more municipalities adapt the rules for tiny houses to allow more options to become common.
That said, there are places that treat the lots like a co-op, allowing individual ownership. There is also the option for special zoning to be granted, if you can convince those in charge for the location. There are places that do allow a tiny house to be the primary residence. They’re just not very common or require some change, like placing the home on a foundation and/or increasing it’s size to meet the minimum size requirement. While the home would usually need to meet Appendix Q or local equivalent in the building codes.
