Incredible Tiny House With Curved Gable Roof

It was built by Robert Johnson from Esk’et Building Co. He’s a journeyman carpenter who designed and built this beautiful Sqlelten tiny house in the Esk’etemc First Nation at Alkali Lake, BC. Sqlelten means salmon in Secwepemctsin, and it represents swimming against all odds.

This tiny house is built on a 20′ long x 8′ wide trailer and the tiny house is 13’6″ tall from the ground up. It has 280 square feet of interior living space including the lofts.

There’s a cozy living room with a large propane fireplace and electric baseboards for heat. It’s nice to have two sources of heat when you’re in a cold climate because that way you have a backup in case the electricity goes out, or if the propane tank is unexpectedly empty.

The first loft is accessible with a unique spiral ladder.  It has a large bed, some storage space in the knee wall, and large windows to make the space feel big and bright.  The ceiling is gently curved which gives you a good amount of headspace regardless of where you’re sitting up.

The second loft is above the bathroom and is accessible with a space-saving ladder on wheels.  It has a more traditional style ceiling shape and two lovely round windows.

Directly opposite the front door is the kitchen with a lovely wooden countertop, a window in front of the sink for daydreaming while washing dishes, and open shelving up top to maintain an open-concept feel in the space.

There’s also an extra lip coming off the counter that’s just big enough for two people to sit around and share a meal.

We hope you take the time to check out the series of YouTube videos Robert made about his tiny house build, and if you’re ever in the area, go visit Esk’et and stay in his tiny house!!

Very nice and well done except the roof!!
What a fiasco that is, ugly and complicated. There is beauty in simplicity. Just gently flowing curved roof lines can add a lot of looks without getting gaudy, tripling the work, costs.

This was an artisan build, just like how he did the door with the bear carving on it… There will always be criticism of any artistic choices but main issue with the roof is the material, something with more character like a tile or shingle roof would probably appear better…

Agree, beauty is in the eye of the beholder… but by golly the roof is just asking for trouble. Too complex shapes and a LOT of wasted space.

On the plus side the main entrance door and the fireplace are standouts.

One of the honest-to-God truest things ever said is “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” For me the jury is out as to the curved roof. But the light, bright white interior is a jewel. I particularly like the wood plank kitchen countertop; in fact I plan to put one made of oak planks in the kitchen of the retirement cottage that I am now building in northwest Arkansas: 1,100 ft2 total, of which 750 ft2 is my quarters with a back studio apartment of approx 350 ft2 to rent out. The oak tree that provided the planks for my kitchen countertop was cut on the yard of my cottage — the tree was more than half dead and in danger of falling, so I had to help it along. Does he build these home to sell? I wonder what the cost would be to have one built.

Primarily a carpentry and renovation service business, and this was done as a personal project that wasn’t built to be sold but he does take on building projects and you can try contacting him and see if he can be commissioned to build one…
