Ditching the American Dream for Skoolie Life

Tawny and Mike had the American Dream — a home, a gym, and all the trappings of modern life. But they felt trapped and unhappy despite their circumstances and wanted to find more. So they started selling everything and building a school bus home!

It’s been four years, and they split their skoolie’s time between travel and staying put in Montana where they have dreams of homesteading with family. Their bus has the most amazing bathroom — enjoy the tour below!

Their Story:

We have lived in our skoolie, Oliver, for almost four years. Once upon a time we owned a gym and a big house and were doing the whole American Dream thing when we realized it wasn’t actually OUR dream. So we sold it all, spent a year building the bus and transitioning out of our old life, and hit the road. We spend part of our time traveling and part of it parked at home base in Montana, where the idea is to build an off-grid homestead we share with family. You can find quite a lot more details to our backstory and the time we’ve spent living in Oliver on our blog (sincewewokeup.com) or in my book of the same name.

    re — conversion, then use, then convert the conversion
    .
    On skoolie and other home-built forums, we suggest:
    * acquire a likely candidate
    * toss in some car-camping gear
    * go have fun.
    Allow the conversion to evolve organically.
    .
    Does ‘building then using risk forcing the adventure to fit the build’?
