Aerodynamic Tiny House on Wheels: Taking Tiny Living on the Road?

This post contains affiliate links.

If you’re thinking of traveling with your future tiny house you might want to think about building something like this because it’s aerodynamic.

Not only that but it’s also lighter in weight too. And when you go inside I think you’ll be amazed at all that’s in there.

Granted, this is pretty big for a teardrop trailer but you could still consider it one if you wanted to.

Discussion: Traveling with your own DIY Tiny House

Have you ever thought of designing and building your own micro home to travel in? I’ve always wanted to build a teardrop camper to travel with economically but a lot smaller than this one. I’d build one that I could pull with a 4-cylinder or a 6-cylinder car for long trips, to go cross country, etc. How about you?

Wow! Talk about ROOMY for a teardrop camper…. I definitely would love to have this one for trips around the country. However, I did not see a toilet; is there one with the shower? Are plans available to build this particular camper? Wonderful design!

Is it possible to get plans for this trailer? Thank you.

More like an RV than a tiny home.

This is a really cool tiny home. It is so creatively arranged inside, and the outside adds so much interest. I love it!

I am with the group that hopes there is a toilet we aren’t seeing, because this is really well planned.

Seems like a great idea. We also plan to travel around with our tiny home on wheels when we transition to that. Does anyone know of data on fuel economy (miles per gallon) difference pulling a tear drop vs a more box type trailer? We’ve been thinking of a cargo trailer conversion.

So why is this trailer being referred to as a teardrop? I have owned 2 teardrops and they are called that for a reason. They are shaped like a teardrop! Towards the end of the “teardrop” era in the mid 60’s the trailers lost their teardrop shape but retained the fact that the back of the trailer opened like the trunk of a car exposing a kitchen stove, sometimes a sink and icebox. The inside is a mattress to sleep on and some minimal storage and/or a shelf above your legs from the knees down. Call it like it is. This is more of a canned ham shaped trailer like the ones you may see in a Yogi Bear cartoon. Nice use of space and I bet easy to tow with the curved front end.

This design is far from being aerodynamic. Although the interior is roomy, cozy and has a feminine touch to it, the exterior looks like an all boys clubhouse boasting with exaggerated ego. Honestly the exterior looks like a design gone bad.

Best “Tear Drop” I’ve seen. I’ll assume if it has a shower it must have a toilet also. I have 2 kids I would fit small bunk beds with privacy curtains at one end. If it was light enough for a v-6 it would be perfect.

I think this is a great little rig and a good job was done building it and decorating. Yes, one hopes there is a toilet somewhere. I personally think this would be a bit cramped to live in full time, but then there is the guy who has turned his Corolla into tiny home. We do what we need to do. This would be fantastic to travel in, would be easier on gas due to its design then a traditional travel trailer and basically has all the amenities (well, perhaps not a toilet – LOL). A fun little place.

It is aerodynamic as the front end allows the wind to “glide” over the rig and not create drag. I do not see how one could say that it is not aerodynamic, nor that the man is overly full of himself. Perhaps we do not need to be quite so snarky.

Does anyone know the length? I’m guessing between 14 and 16 feet, but then that’s only a SWAG.

If you look just below the 3rd paragraph in the post, you will see a gray rectangular box with “Tiny Home Teardrop Trailer” inside the box and highlighted in blue. Click on that link and it will take you to the blog for this tiny house…..I don’t think it should be referred to as a “teardrop” either. Nice use of space, creative, cozy, great design. The details of the build in the blog do not show or speak of a toilet either…so, they make plenty of portable options for boats, rv’s, etc….pick your choice. Sure is better to use your own, than some of the public bathrooms you find on the road. Thanks for sharing with us Andrea. I truly enjoy every post and have begun my project “dwelling”. Keep up the great work Alex.

Great use of space! As others have mentioned no toilet? would be easy enough to add a compost toilet to this. The loft looks too cramped, but it works. Think this is one of the best really small trailer designs I have seen.

See folks! Aerodynamics. Cuts down fuel bills when travelling. As I have pointed out in other posts having a flexible aerodynamic add on to the front of a TH would drastically cut fuel bills. Could, depending on the TH, save up to 10% of your gas costs. Nothing to sniff at that is for real. And at the end of your move it could be removed and folded up and put away until the next time.

Without seeing detailed construction plans or pics, it’s really hard to judge this unit for me. The exterior aesthetics don’t work for me. There are plenty of RV’s that have the curved bullnose front ends. I wonder if the elevation change on the roof helps or hurts the aerodynamics? My belief is that a steady taper would in fact increase aerodynamic efficiency. Where’s a wind tunnel when ya need it :)) Definitely helps with the lighting though.

The interior is nice & cozy looking & I find it more attractive than the generic RV interiors. However, I don’t think it’s size would work for me either. I believe what most people commonly consider a THOW’s is not really something that is designed or expected to travel much but has the capability of being moved around if desired. While I believe that any small space you live in can be called a tiny home (as long as you can cook/eat/sleep/shower/crap in it) I think this would commonly be referred to as an RV or TT.

I’d like to see some specs (length, width, oa height & interior ht, weight, insulation, etc). Not getting the pvc pipe they call a diesel tank ????

All in all, a pretty cool build & my hat’s always off to anybody who builds their vision, Bravo!

Call it what you want…its got a wonderful interior and appears that you guys put a lot of time and effort into it. ..not everyone has the talent to build this from scratch. Good luck in your travels.
