Adventurous Couple’s DIY School Bus Motorhome

This post contains affiliate links.

This is Will Hitchcock and Alyssa Pelletier’s custom DIY school bus motorhome who bought the bus for $5,500 and immediately did $2,000 in repairs and maintenance to prepare it for the conversion, according to this article on Houzz.

In total, the couple spent about $30,000 renovating it because they had to strip everything out, add insulation, electric, plumbing, framing, and more (as you’ll see below). Today Will and Alyssa run their business from their school bus conversion while they travel. Pretty inspiring, isn’t it? Please enjoy, learn more and re-share below. Thank you!

Wow, excellent use of space! It feels open and bright. Makes me also think this is the best THOW concept. I like how this home is more portable than most THOW. Fantastic job!!!

Amazing conversion! This is my second time seeing it. I want to add that I love the décor, and I love the step, vent, bedroom, bathroom traffic area. Very cleverly done. The entire bus is just wonderful!

Very well designed, the materials used make it so light and airy.
It’s so unusual to see the rear door being used on these old school buses, generally they’re blocked up to make spaces for a larger bed. With all their biking/hiking/camping gear I can see why they went that route. Personally, I’d make it a tad bit smaller or put storage compartments in places, or expand the bathroom slightly towards the back, otherwise it seems almost perfect.

Have heard about some using steel tubs for bathtubs…but this is the first time I’ve seen it in a build.

What an awesome idea. I always love seeing stuff being repurposed like this. And to be honest I’m actually surprised it seems to work as well as it does (as an RV). I’d think there might not be enough space on a school bus for everything you’d need, but clearly they have everything covered!

Anyone know where I could find someone to hire to make a bus just like this?

I’d love to know as well! An RV comparable to this would cost so much more. $30,000 I can do!

This is a good story, much more in keeping with the tiny house spirit. Cost seems within bounds for people who don’t intend to spend their whole adult life paying a mortgage. Could someone at this sight put a comprehensive list of where you can park a tiny house on wheels, and just basics of restrictions. It seems like the movement has enough followers nationwide, that some semblance of information could be provided to your readers, for free of course.

Curious: What kind of a toilet is that?

This is, by far, the very best bus conversion I have ever seen. I cannot think of a single criticism to make. Light, airy and uncluttered work to reduce the “closed in” feeling of most buses. In the world of bus conversions, this is a work of art.

As a school bus driver for 25 years l find the fact that you have removed or blocked all the exits but one, the main door , l am stunned. And not keeping the back door available, l would not spend even one night in that bus! Any roof hatches (if there was any) are gone. While all the vinal seats are gone, safety should be your first thoughts when designing your home. Admittedly, I’m still thinking like a bus driver but love the idea of converting a school bus. Wish you the best of luck but will keep my fingers crossed for you both.

I think there is an emergency exit on the bathroom window. Safety is very important.

There’s also an emergency exit in the roof in the bedroom, very large one too.

Sorry hit the wrong button for this .. regarding safety..
It looks like they kept the emergency windows intact.. the bathroom and one or two int he main living area. So I think they thought that through.

Wonderful job of creating a comfortable home out of a school bus. I really like the kitchen and work area. The nicest bathroom I have seen in a school bus conversion.
