While the “tiny house movement” might be relatively new, the concept of small homes has been around since the beginning of time. This 100+-year-old cabin in Alberta is one of those historic tiny homes, originally built for fur trading in the area near Ghost Lake.
It’s been upgraded with electricity and modern plumbing, and a wood stove provides heat on snowy evenings. There’s a sink and toilet inside the cabin, and a shower and laundry at a nearby building. A kitchenette allows you to cook simple meals during your stay.

Natalie learned carpentry skills in a number of workshops but noticed that many of the women watched while the men “did the things.” She had a passion for permaculture and sustainable building and wanted to create a safe space where women could get hands-on building experience to create their own homes! So she started Wild Abundance.
Her own log tiny house (which has been added onto over the years and is now “small” rather than “tiny”) sits on the property where she does workshops, but there are also lots of educational videos on her website which you can learn from. eLogHomes offers a couple of packages for finishes, and you find a builder to finish out the plumbing, electrical etc. They said the kits usually cost between $45 and $85 per square foot ($21K-$41K), and then you pay to finish it.
