915 Sq Ft Cottage Renovation in Germany

Katharina and her husband purchased this 1960s home that was once a holiday property and hadn’t been updated since it was built. While living in it, the couple has done a fantastic job taking it from old to new, while still retaining (or adding) so much charm to the building.

There are exposed beams, a hardwood floor, a lovely full kitchen in the corner, and a bedroom with a cozy bed alcove. The special artist studio is the icing on the cake!  Read Katharina’s story about her home below the photo tour.

Lovely 1960s Home Completed Renovated

Exposed beams and plaster walls give the place such a lovely feel.

The lounge couch sits near a large picture window.

And there’s a beautiful art studio in the corner.

The double bed tucks into the alcove.

An open shelving wardrobe gives a home to their clothing.

There’s a compact corner kitchen with a SMEG fridge.

The bathroom has a shower stall, toilet, and sink.

How fun would it be to have your own sauna?

And a beautiful wooden hot tub.

What a quaint home!

Interview with Katharina:

We bought our house two years ago and have been renovating it in our own since then. Both of us, my husband and I, already live in the house and meanwhile finish the individual rooms piece by bit. Our house is from the sixties and stands on a 1000 m2 plot.

The garden is very green and overgrown and has a very large old tree population. The property borders a forest and is located in a very small village in Central Franconia, Bavaria (Germany). So the surroundings are very beautiful and in the middle of nature.

The house itself was still in its original condition from the 60s at the time of purchase. In the meantime, we have managed to replace and partially enlarge the old windows, to replace the entrance doors and the interior doors, open the roof, re-insulate and cover it. We laid beautiful wooden floorboards everywhere, redesigned the bathroom a new shower, washbasin and toilet. Also built a kitchen. Another bathroom with bathtub and a laundry room in the basement is planned.

In the meantime, we have placed a barrel sauna and a bath tub in the garden and are planning some further renovations in the spring. For example, the fence still needs to be renewed and some dead branches, bushes and trees removed. In addition, we want to redesign the terrace in spring. By the way, the house has a total of about 85 m2 of living space, which includes a bedroom, a small art studio, a small bathroom, a larger living, cooking and dining area and two other small rooms from which a second bathroom and a laundry room will be created. The house was originally built as a holiday property, about 20 years ago the resort became a housing estate. We and our two cats love to live here!

I love this house! Very avant garde to combine sleek, modern black kitchen cabinets with a well-loved wooden cabinet. Inspirational, really. We thought it would be fun if the refrigerator was named Smaug instead of Smeg. Perhaps an oven would be better named after a dragon, though! hahaha Love the cat taking a bath in the shower! I would move into this place in a heartbeat and will incorporate some of the design elements into my kitchen remodel. Thanks for sharing!

One more note…this is scaled down living at its best! There is just one thing I would change and that is to have a little room on either side of the bed so it was easier to get in and out as well as change the bedding. Perfect otherwise!

Love except for the fireplace surround… looks messy and untidy. Cover the bricks and it’d be way cooler.
