77 Sq. Ft. Modern Micro Compact Home

This post contains affiliate links.

This 77 sq. ft. modern micro compact home is designed by Horden Cherry Lee Architects and is available through the Micro Compact Home brand. Interestingly, the design inspiration comes from the Smart Car and Japanese Tea Houses.

This tiny home is designed for one person (although I’m sure you can sleep two). But they’re also designed to become stackable to develop communities if one wanted to. Pretty cool, right? This means the micro cabins can be used as dorms for students, for example.

The units are about 8.7′ by 8.7′ by 8.7′ which translates to about 77 square feet. Now that’s tiny, right? Please enjoy the photo tour, video, and links to more information below. I’m also curious about your thoughts on this micro cube house so if you want let’s talk about it in the comments below. Thank you.

If you’re curious about cost, they start at about $43,145 in USD per unit (estimated).

Thanks for the link. The cost sounds pretty exorbitant. Since I would want to visit with company I don’t think this would work for me. I guess the floor plan shown in the above link doesn’t include the larger size ordered by the Drs, that includes a double bed and dinner seating for 8. So, fairly attractive, but not very economically priced. And the 2.6m cube would be pretty small. So, an overall thumbs down from me.

I think that the question raised was about a compact plan that included a “mud” or utility room. My point in sharing this link was to illustrate that one space could perform as shower, “mud” room & entrance. I was not suggesting that the micro-compact by horden would serve all your needs.

It would be great if they made something like that in the United States the shipping from Europe would probably double the price

The cube design sucks. As well does the outside color, and the inside color. And $43K plus, for that? Hah, I could spend a lot less, and get a new travel trailer, or just buy a used shipping container for $1-2,000 and convert it, or even make a similar design, again for a lot less. Where’s the floor plan?

This is quite amazing. Think about the energy cost savings. So ideal for busy single person who really only sleeps and showers at home.
Agree with Eugene. It would be nice to see floor plans.

Couldn’t make out much with the limited images…..went to the website…..same limited images…..waste of time if I cannot mentally and visually walk through and see what they are trying to sell

.. They look well laid out and very practical but also very clinical and non individual .. They’d be great for housing projects and the design would be great with timber veneers and a bit more warmth and character built in .. Not a fan of the price either really, but I suppose it’s realistic for what it is ..

Too space age sterile and expensive for me but it might offer some layout ideas if you could see what exactly the layout is. I do like the porch. It would be nice to have a cover option for it.

I think they were going for that space-age “POD” effect here…that lacking is the character. A group of them would be neat however the price is outrageous no matter who or where! I live in a 650sf home (its too big) but is a suburban cookie cutter place 2br+ (converted attic) with a garage on a 40×80 lot, its in an older city neighborhood in decent condition(aka, needed cosmetic work paint etc..) 10 yrs ago I grabbed it at 35k (I actually like my house and neighborhood, just too confining/or not practical) for the work I do… so considering that, there’s no way I’m spending more on a TH. I’m going for making living really happen for my family, instead of paying the over abundant utilities for the 13′ of overhead space etc we don’t use and the loud music the neighbors blast at all hours (and they wonder why cities are going down hill, there’s no courtesy, no standards)

    I don’t see a kitchen?

8′-7″ puts it just outside trailering range.

I agree too costly for this… Space Age? My immediate thought was torture chamber! But I have seen something like before in one of the tiny house books-but style “warmer ” on inside, and more than one cube stacked-two or three, turned at a bit of an angle..corners not lined up. Modern looking, built up to save space, and larger than 77! 🙂

$47,000 + for 77 sq feet????! That’s insane. I like the idea of small living, but you can build a 200 sq ft for that or less.

I think “operating room” or maybe “biology lab” just about describes the aesthetic they have going. That said, there’s no reason this couldn’t be replicated in a more welcoming material.

Thing is, even with the floor plan I couldn’t really get an idea of how the space is supposed to -work-, much less the multifunctional aspects of it, so it’s hard to say whether it’s a practical design or not.

….I also wouldn’t want the toilet to be the first thing that greets me upon entering my living space, but that might just be me. o_O

Thought about this some more. I have a small shop that is 8’X12′ – it would be filled with dining for 8, so ain’t no way this closet would do it. And no toilet? No way. The way I see it, it would be possibly acceptable as sleeping space for one person, and that’s about it. My shop cost me $850 I believe it was, delivered, and erected. And if I had built is myself it would have cost a lot less, but taken longer to errect, as is one guy put up the sections he had pre-fabbed at his home, in about four hours. Well worth the bit extra cost. As is my shop would be crowded, but if the walls were at least two feet higher, a sleeping loft could be made, and the floor space would then be adequate for a small kitchen, shower, toilet, seating and eating spaces. The price would be more now, but if I did the work, probably do it for aroound $750-1000. If I had the work done, probably $1000 or so more. Or, I could spend arout $4000-5000 and get a building about 15’X15′ or so, delivered and errected, with a second story (not a loft, a second story).

That’s about $560/sq. ft. I can’t begin to tell what I would expect for that price tag. Plus you cannot honestly call some the size of a refrigerator box to be a home. You might be able to sleep there and keep a change of underwear in a box, but a home? You’ll spend all of your time elsewhere. It’s just a place to sleep where you can lock a door.

So close. I’d want 8 foot ceiling, no wood products and an HRV unit. Then I’d buy one. The complete dream house would also have a sloped translucent ceiling.

I want to buy and start living in a “tiny house”. They are just the most wonderful way of living I’ve ever come across. I love, more than anything, to travel. I can’t think of a better way than to spend my days on the road. Thank you, Antoinette

I try to make a point of “accentuating the positive” in a TH so, I believe this would be a welcome retreat in an emergency or as a temporary dwelling. The (too) few photos and the way they’re shot offer absolutely no perspective for a viable opinion.

From what I can see, this looks like a place I’d try to escape from as opposed to finding sanctuary. I believe I’d feel like a specimen in a lab after a few hours in this thing. Tea house meets Dr. Frankenstein.

As for the cost, is that a misprint? Is this thing made out of a rare and precious metal of some sort? I’m all for making a decent profit but at over $560 per square foot -and for this (?), you have -got- to be kidding!
