Hi, Deadrock. I haven’t seen comments from you in awhile, and I hope you’re all right. Did you ever make it to Asheville? If you want to reply but prefer to do it privately, my email is maremarx at yahoo dot com.

Hey, Mare! Thanks for remembering me. I’ve been doing poor Alex a favor and taking my divisive presence elsewhere for awhile, at least until people forgot what they didn’t like about me. 🙂 But to answer your question, yes…I did make the move to Asheville just over 3 months ago, and I’ve joined a tiny house meetup group and am hitting the land search hard. I’ll email you with a brief message since you were kind enough to suggest that would be OK!

Love your home. My husband and I are thinking of building our own. You have a large cut out in kitchen/living area. How did you support it?

MareM, don’t know if you’re still a visitor to the site, but I got a message in my inbox that someone had replied to a message I’d commented on, so I just thought I’d drop in and update.

I did make it to Asheville, as I mentioned, and ended up buying a house rather than land. But after 3 years here, I’m done with the (nearly) relentless gray skies, and have sold house, belongings, business, including all locks, stocks, and barrels, traded in my weensy Fiat for a Jeep, and bought a little trailer camper. So as of May 15 of this year, I will be living the tiny life after all. 135 sf, to be exact. I will follow the sun and my own whims (keeping well within reach of WiFi, as I do still have to make a living), and time will tell if I’m able to get along with Deadrock v.5.8.3. I guess it really is possible to keep reinventing yourself, no matter how old you get.

Home is where you park it, as they say. Just hope my cat gets over the shock.

Be sure to visit NovaDeko’s website. Their modular homes are astounding and the floorplans make sense. Biggest plus: the prices are reasonable.

Yes, although I assume they’re quoting in Australian dollars. What’s the cost to ship the finished product to the U.S.? Prohibitive, I bet.

You’re lucky: hesitation based on an unfounded “bet” stops you from having to expend energy.
I’ve inquired to see if they work with anyone near me or sell plans.

According to the manufacturer’s website, the Kiev model costs 104,000 AUD plus installation; that works out to around 75k USD plus installation. All told, figure maybe 100k USD. Definitely a deluxe home, despite the small size.

I was bummed to see that too. Any ideas on who is doing this in the USA?

      • Deadrock
        September 21, 2015, 11:56 am

I spent quite some time last night researching that very question. It seems to me there’s a real market for container home builders – although if you know all about building but nothing about marketing your great idea for a home building service will wither on the vine. I found a couple that got mentioned in articles, but the links to their home pages were now defunct. You could try mekaworld dot com, or shippingcontainerhomedesign dot com, or numendevelopment dot com. There’s one or two more I found that either specialize in commercial rather than residential, or their websites were so terrible (or not even being monitored anymore) that I moved on. Good luck – please share if you find any other companies!

I can not believe no one in the USA is offering these container homes. I know you can buy the raw containers for about $3,000 – $3,500 each. There’s a market for container homes in US!

I love Nova Deko home designs & the idea of using a bespoke shipping container. However, the prices of their products have soared in the past few months – & I mean soared – up by $30K per design in some cases. Very disappointing as before they were quite affordable homes given that you’d still have to spend many thousands on foundations + connecting services & the buying in the other exclusions listed. Love them but can no longer afford them.

    September 23, 2015, 11:30 am

Currently living in No. California, although I am flying out to Asheville in a few weeks to scout out land there. But I called a place in Yreka, CA (just up the road from me) where they sell/rent shipping containers, just to see what kinds of prices I could expect. The quotes I got:
    40′, 8.5′ high (used, variable conditions): $3775
    20′, 8.5′ high (used, beat up): $2800
    20′, 8.5′ high (new): $4500
    45′, 9.5′ high (used, good condition): $4200

I especially liked that last one – say one 40 or 45 footer and a decent 20 footer together would make a perfectly good sized home – some might manage nicely on less. For anyone thinking of moving to the alpine mtns. of No. CA, land is (fairly) affordable and out in the woods nobody cares much about building codes. If you can do the work to convert it, that’s a pretty cheap package. If you need to hire someone to do the construction, well…that’s more of a challenge, but do-able. So food for thought.

I love alternative style homes. This includes railroad cars, Gypsy wagons, Hacienda Style Straw Bale, and Earthship designs.

First concern (Shipping container) is where do you intend to put it and what is it’s use going to be. Living, office, additional outside living with an exterior patio kitchen? That list will go on.
You should talk with your local county building department. It would be a drag if you install the container, do all the interior reno’s and find out that it’s not allowed to be used.
Quick example: Your local Build Dept. may require that it’s placed on a perimeter concrete Foundation two feet off the ground as opposed to setting it on a slab. There are cost differences for those different installations. Need to find out what’s allowed in your area. Unless you have some rural land where codes aren’t an issue and nobody’s watching what you’re doing out there, most places will require a permit.
With the exterior walls in place, the rest is easy! Insulation in these ice boxes is very important!! Ya have to beat the heat and keep the frost from bittin yer ass. I would recommend ridgid insulation board for the interior. This way, you can cut channels along the walls and ceiling to run your electrical conduit for lights, switches and recepticals. For plumbing, I would run your pipes in a small, horizontal box along the walls like base board (if you can) the reason is that if it’s in the interior of the room, (inside of the ridgid insulation, this will help keep the pipes from freezing!)
Another thought about putting these containers on a raised fondation: If you have a plumbing problem with your toilet or shower/sink DRAINS, it will be easier to get to the plumbing (Drains) if you can access them from beneath the container. Just sayin!-Just thinkin!

The Shell is pretty heavy gauge steel. Bullet proof!-Nice if you need that!
To install a door, window, Slider just bust out the cutting torch (Hire a welder for this) and then install a frame in the hole for the doors etc.
The floors in these things are usually plywood. Some have planks. Either way, the floor is not insulated! Must think about that! Once again, If on a perimeter foundation, you can insulate from below. If you’re gonna put it on a slab, before you pour your concrete, design the ridgid insulation into the prepared slab floor and pour over it.
Okay, that’s day one. You’re almost finished!

Rule Number One: Talk to your local building department!!!! I know, we don’t always want to share our plans. Sometimes we just want to scream that we have to divulge Our Personal STUFF and PLANS. But, the alternative may be that you can’t have what you just built because you didn’t follow the rules! Man, I Hate that!
Rule Number Two: What ever you do, Make It Safe! Remember, you’ll be in a box! Gotta have a way out!
Anybody can build with these things! Get some measurements. Do some sketches. Research some building materials. Even make a small Scale Model out of Card board and place some mock up walls etc. It doesn’t cost a thing to research or envision. Take pictures of your model and bring your thoughts to your local building department for their initial opinion. They’ll let you know if there have been other container homes in your county that have been approved. Maybe they’ll give you a couple of addresses. Do a drive by. Maybe meet the owners/ builders and find out the hastles/hurtles (if any) that they had to go through to get it through the Build Dept.
    Etc, Etc. Etc.
    Just start!! Reasearch!!!
    Make it yours!

It is all a matter of perspective. Houses in Australia seem to be soooooo much more expensive that in USA. Americans are always complaining about the price of small homoes and I am jumping up and down that you can actually get anything for that price.

So if you had solar power, tank water and composting toilet how much ‘installation’ is required – plonking it on some foundations?

Shepherds huts are around $60,000 AUD here. These seem to be just that bit bigger just that bit sturdier. No termite problems.

You could build a whole leggo village with them couldnt you?

I think I am in love.

yep, its a great looking place, but doesnt seem to qualify as a “tiny” home to me. i guess it depends on where your coming ” from” and plan on going “to”. to me, the double wide deal is huge, pretty far from tiny living. save money? again, i guess it depends on what you wanna spend. id call it a small home for some and really big for many. beautiful none the less.

  • Bear Wolan
    October 27, 2017, 12:05 pm

With a single container you are pretty limited for space, but with 2 or more you can rival more conventional floor plans while still building economically and scaleable solutions. We are embarking on that path as students studying construction management/design and hope to contribute some unique ideas in the future for various locations in Texas. This pin shows or hints at the use of decks, expansions and multiple units that we feel are key to mainstream adoption and lifestyle usage.
