60 Minutes Features Family Living in Box Truck

Just the other night 60 Minutes featured homeless families throughout the United States.

One of which was a father and his two children living in their box truck in Florida.

The show also features other homeless folks making it work in cheap motels and others are living out of their vehicles.

There are millions of people right now struggling to keep their homes.

Is there anything you can do in your town to help those who are less fortunate than you?

It’s unfortunate to see people in situations like this yet encouraging to see them helping each other, former strong relationships with each other and appreciating the simple things.

I watched the film with the poor family living in a truck and must say that Florida is a bad choice for the homeless. Usually, hidden public policy is designed to make life even worse for them.
The other factor is that Florida is notoriously hot and unusually humid most of the year and mosquitoes are not trivial here either. In many areas mosquitoes are a nightmare that even strangle cattle by filling their airways. Life in a truck that is not air conditioned would be like life in a sauna and could easily kill even a healthy person. If you want a tiny home here you will need a good AC system and hopefully be in a good shady location as well.

Thanks for your thoughts Jim, great points. Florida’s got my choice for the winter time though.. no need for AC or heat really. But when summer comes definitely gotta head north.

We saw this on TV last night (in New Zealand). Those kids have a fantastic attitude. I hope they dont bake in summer.

I agree, incredible attitudes. Heart wrenching to see.

This is going on in all 50 states; meanwhile, our ‘good’ people in Congress are able to vote themselves raises…what is wrong with this picture?

I want to contact this family’s father.

Hi Don- honestly, not sure. Best way to be to try to contact them via the CBS reporters who were in contact with them. Thanks so much for your interest in helping them. That’s really cool of you.

It’s a fun notion living in a van if you don’t have to, travel of choice selected locations and campgrounds without children who depend on school and you for finding work to feed them. As hard as it is for them to try to blend, they are very noticeable if you know where and what to look for, “just about anywhere” in the cities. The people here were fantastic but the father not wanting to be on TV, single dad, eating pride, what a guy doing anything to keep his family together. I would like to talk to that young 15 years old when she is 30 and see how she turned out. Probably wonderful but she sound like what we used to call an old sole. Best of prayers and thoughts for their welfare and that’s about all an individual can give unless you physically meet them and they will accept help… Not charity but help.
