6 Years of Full Time Van Life for Travelling Digital Nomad Couple

Armando and Mel from Westfalia Digital Nomads have been living in a VW camper van, full-time, for over 6 years now.

To fund their travels, they work online as digital nomads doing freelance writing and videography.

They chose to live in a van because it was the perfect way to combine work, travel, and home.

They have a portable WiFi device, and in each new country they buy a new SIM card with a data plan. This way they can do their work from almost anywhere in the world.

They are not adrenaline junkies, rather, they prefer to travel slowly, spending a few months, or more, in each country. They also enjoy peaceful places and don’t spend too much time in big cities. They’ve travelled most of Europe, Canada, and parts of Turkey and Morocco.

It’s interesting and inspiring for us to see a couple who’ve found a sustainable way to fund their travels, and who genuinely want to pursue a minimalist, alternative lifestyle over the long term.  Check out the video below to learn more about their #vanlife experience so far.

Amazing how people can return to the minimum. This camper is in fact small, limited storage, no bathroom and especially in bad weather you can’t move much around.
I guess this camper is for young guys or singles only.

Not for everyone, for sure, but I have seen families live in such vans and sometimes even groups up to 8 that traveled together for a bit… Mind, most van dwellers care more about the freedom the lifestyle provides and don’t generally need the van for much besides transportation and a place to sleep…

Many use public restrooms, have gym membership with national chains that are often open 24/7, and are usually having too much fun exploring nature and traveling to the point they don’t actually spend that much time in the van or even necessarily near it all the time…

While there are those who are even more extreme and just forgo a permanent home base entirely and travel with what’s on their back, making temporary structures as needed along the way or at most use a bicycle and tow around what they need.

Like Kim stated, it’s also not limited to the young…

It’s just a very different mindset and lifestyle from what most people may be used to… But there are people who wouldn’t have it any other way…

I love this. I am also looking for a van to do this. There are so many people of all ages very happy with this lifestyle. People in their 60’s and up even. For so many, it is a lifestyle of choice.
