I’d make the ‘couch’ into a U shaped one with ottoman/storage to fill it in. And I’d use it as my bed too.

And put the bathroom and add storage where the stairs are and eliminate them.

Nice wall unit and sitting at my wall now trying to figure out how to do mine of my 12’x12′. 4 ‘ for bath, now trying to decide how much of the 8’ left gets to be closet and how much desk/ electronics, etc.

If you eliminate the stairs, how will you get to the second floor space? Or would you just ignore/lose that and go for a 240 sq ft apartment? That’s too small in my book.

You can use it for anything you want. Office, storage, etc.

The stairs are cute, not practical taking up much space for little utility for the cubit ‘. I’d go for lowering stairs or ladder saving 20 sq’x’s 2 floors.

I’m actually doing the same in a 12′ by 12′ cabin without a sleeping loft but 2 12’x2’ storage lofts with built in furniture with plenty of time.

Space, not time. Wish there was an edit button!

A 12′ x 14′ cabin that you visit on vacation, or a rural property to live on – that is one thing, plus you would probably own it. But a 250 sq ft apartment for which you pay rent, and own nothing at the end? Not worth giving up that second floor. And I say that from the perspective of a city apartment dweller who is used to living in spaces much smaller than the average American house. But of course we can agree to disagree, right?

LOVE the *pop* of red with the SMEG frig! Nice touch. This is in Brazil, if anyone’s curious.

Reminds me of my first studio apartment, a bazillion years ago. So, “Yes”, I could live in here as a young single person. Now? Not so much. 😀

I would happily live there & I have a husband & daughter! (And, yes, I would live there with them! ;)) I think the top floor is big enough to even make 2 bedrooms with some reconfiguration, if one wanted to do so. It seems really spacious with the open floor plan & the lines are so clean. Many families all over the world live in spaces smaller than this even. Obviously, it just depends on the person! I like it a lot. 🙂

Me too. Great space to be in a city I think 🙂

I would definitely live there! In fact, it’s one of the most realistic small space living options I’ve seen. The full-size appliances, bathroom fixtures and walk-around bed space make this a real contender for taking the plunge and actually downsizing. I too would also like maybe an L-shaped sofa and a dining table though, but that’s just preference, and in this home you would have those options. Nicely done.

I actually like the floor plan drawing more than the finished project-When I first saw it I thought it was in japan. The tiled wall on the first level not completely sure- I kind a like it. The spiral staircase- I like as a sculptural element- not sure about the color choice of black- the upstairs cube of the staircase- I would line with bookshelves filled with books. The big couchy bed thing – would be ok if I didn’t have the second story with a bed. If I lived in New York this would be ok. The tile would be a good sound barrier?, I would be eating out a lot – just need a frig and microwave to reheat leftovers. Have a Juliet type of balcony or if high enough a nice view. Have a community garden on the roof of the building-community gym in the building-Laundry service. On the first few levels of the building, a coffee shop, or even little grocery store. I actually do miss living in a dorm and being able to go grab dinner at the cafeteria. How about a community cafeteria- that will also deliver a boxed dinner and place it in your frig so when you get home you can just heat it up.

If it were not for the fact that the ceilings were very tall; thus allowing for a second level to be added, this apartment would be too small.

It is very beautiful. Love how he has lots of storage. The open space above the couch gives the room a much bigger feel. The combination of wood and concrete gives it an amazing contrast. As for the stairwell, I would have painted it a lighter colour to give the illusion of even bigger space.

We have many small units here that are the same square footage but with only 8′ high ceilings making loft areas impossible.

Had a unit like the one in this article been available in my city “and” be affordable, I would get one. I did see loft units of similar size and with high ceilings (though only 13″ high) renting for over $2000 CAD per month. Prices like that defeats the purpose of seeking a small home. For that amount of money, I might as well seek a 1200 square foot place.

I would live there based on the layout and size. For my own preferences I would change some things. I particularily like the compact kitchen and Smeg fridge. I like the ceiling wood but would prefer it to be switched with the floor finish. A positive note about the staircase is that no one will ever miss that there is a loft. I live in a 180 square foot cottage so this is a luxurious amount of space for myself.

Thanks Jane. Would love to get to see your 180 sq ft cottage if possible and I agree- this is a nice amount of space for those of us living tiny

Yes, I could live there alone, but I would paint the staircase white. As it is now black I think it would be difficult to see the stairs. Otherwise, this is a good layout.

Gorgeous! I’d love living in a place like that … Tho I’m sure anything that smart and beautiful has rent so far beyond my budget…

Oh yeah, could definitely live here. The beautiful red fridge gives just enough ‘wow’ factor without dominating the space. Yeah the stairs take up space but until you need to put something in that space besides the stairs you have to admit, they are an interesting focal point and actually help balance out any extra “pop” of red. In the loft, great job of balancing such a powerful color like black contrasted with white. Nice thing about tiny houses; you can maintain a very cozy feel with a completely open floor plan. Nice job.

You had me with the red fridge.

The rest is icing. Not completely thrilled with the spiral stairs due to getting things up and down, but I’m sure I could figure out a workaround.

Love the aesthetics. But I’m paying $125/month for my rent of a room in a friend’s basement – not sure I could justify more for all that.

My wife and I have both had heart attacks and are at the point where it is about time to give up our place on the lake…..way too much work to keep it up….hoping to find something like this micro apartment, maybe just a little more square feet, plunk it down within walking distance of everything in our little village, and live out our lives….even wheels on it would be nice to take it to warmer weather in the winter then bring it back up here to Michigan for spring, summer and fall, and be with our son and grand daughter…..I think these tiny homes, micro-apartments, etc. could be the big wave of the future for all the baby boomers who are retiring and becoming more aged….Murray

I would love to live in this . I am a person you stacks things everywhere this would help me not to stack so much.I am a sentimental person and this is awful. I hate to get rid of things people have giving me.

I like it. Love the red refrigerator and red inside the cabinets. I wouldn’t like the sparseness, but it is just right for a fellow. Anyway, easy to keep clean.

I definitely would live there. I adore spiral staircases, even though I do wonder how they got the bed and mattress upstairs. I would keep the color black…makes it into a sculptural focus, form AND function. There’s enough open space to configure things as you wish…i.e put in a small dining room table. And the wall of windows makes it all open and light.
