Mary and her husband reached out to show off their amazing 371 square foot garage-turned-tiny-house. The couple wanted a vacation spot on the pricey Coronado Island in California, so they bought the “big home” and then spent $25,000 renovating the adjacent garage into their holiday home.
The result is a sleek and modern one-floor apartment just minutes away from bars, beaches and beauty! While Mary did this so as a vacation property, it’s not a bad idea for your full-time residence depending on permitting rules. You could easily cover a mortgage payment by renting out the main house, and enjoy a tiny “rent-free” life in the garage! What do you think?

Great idea! I love the Murphy bed. I’m not a fan of bedroom lofts.
I really think murphy beds are the way to go!
Wow this is one of the nicer tiny homes I have seen.Simply beautiful.A job well done.
Yikes! Tooooo much greyyyyy.
Looks like that’s a color balance issue with the camera in the first couple of photos. Note the 5th photo down the floor is definitely not gray but does appear so in the previous photos above it…
Yup, I agree with you. But still too monochromatic for me.
Having said that… it’s quite a nice house.
I don’t understand the purpose of a murphy bed within a walled bedroom. You’re freeing up space for …. what? I would understand if the living room/bedroom was open space. The rest is very nice, although I’d put in more windows and opt for a less busy wall covering in the small bathroom.
More room to do things. Remember while it is a small/tiny house stuff still needs to be done. Enter 1 Murphy bed.
Love the kitchen! The whole floor plan is great and spacious. It’s beautifully decorated, too. Great job!
Every home builder with a “half of a brain”….should take note of this idea for added living space…added income.
Pure brain power.
I’m confused. If they bought a BIG home in Coronado why do they need a garage home?
Hi C,
Your confusion is understandable! Sometimes, people choose to have a smaller second home, like this garage-turned-tiny-home, for various reasons despite owning a larger primary residence. Some possible reasons could be:
Vacation or Weekend Getaway: The tiny home might serve as a vacation home or a weekend getaway, providing a change of scenery and a more relaxed environment away from their main home.
Rental or Investment: They might plan to use the tiny home as a rental property to generate income or as an investment opportunity in a desirable location like Coronado Island.
Downsizing and Simplicity: Despite owning a larger home, they might prefer the simplicity and ease of maintenance that comes with a smaller space.
Guest Accommodation: The tiny home could be intended for guests, extended family, or friends visiting the area.
Location and Lifestyle: The appeal of living in a specific location, like Coronado Island, might have prompted them to acquire a smaller property there for its unique lifestyle benefits.
It’s important to remember that people have different preferences and reasons for their housing choices. While it might seem counterintuitive at first, there could be personal factors driving their decision.
