It looks so huge and it really is only 28 ft. in length but because of it’s narrow walls it’s length seems much more elongated then it really is…! Which really makes tiny house living much more bearable in this case…! I am planning to make a conversation of a shipping container to tiny house some where down the road and now wondering that the ones I have had my eye on are 40 ft. in length will they look to narrow…

… so that’s why most of these THOW don’t have them? Invincible courage, stamina, dexterity, balance and strength?

To all of you who don’t mar your tiny house staircases with rails:
just wait until your sporty self breaks an ankle (on or off those stairs), after which “accessibility” will emerge from theory to practice, sort of like religion after disaster.

It is always wise to have handrails!

I adore these tiny houses and want one so bad, but the only thing that makes these houses more affordable than bricks and sticks is if you already own a one ton truck to haul it around with you and/or you have friends/ realatives with property for you to land on. I have neither so these houses are also out of reach for me. ?

It is hard…at this point it’s tricky to find a place to park your tiny legally!

After my dad died, we had to live in a trailer 37×8 like the one in The Long, Long Trailer with Lucille Ball, for awhile, only ours was 2 bedroom. That space was for my mom and us 3 girls, and it was NOT fun!!!! I think I would live in a mud hut before I went back to such a tiny space. I think it is why we sisters never got along after that.

It can be hard to adjust to such a small space!

I’ve always heard there are no atheists in a foxhole! I am building a THOW on a gooseneck trailer. The bed will be in an alcove on the gooseneck, so technically it will be 25′ long. It seems to me that the majority of people who have plank-style flooring lay it lengthwise rather than from short side to short side (width wise?) It seems to me that doing it width wise would make it appear to be a wider space. Anyone want to weigh in? I have reclaimed red oak flooring from an old house that I’m going to use.

Lengthwise will make the rooms look longer. Width wise should do what you say…guess you have to find out the difficult way!

It’s a general law in clothing that horizontal stripes make you look larger, and vertical ones are slimming, so I don’t see why it’d be any different with flooring 🙂

Zachary, I saw someone take two shorter storage containers and arrange them in a sort of “T” fashion that I thought was good-looking. Personally I think a 40′ long run is too long, but, hey, I live in a 6 X 8′ space currently. And, to each their own!

That’s some tight quarters, Allaw! Impressive 🙂

Hey Allaw, why not herringbone pattern?

Is it just me, or is that last top stair shorter in rise with a longer run than the others? I guess it is okay, because by that point it does not look like one will be standing erect. But in any case, it does look a bit odd.

Just curious: is an alternating stair okay to have? I know in many normal homes they are often not allowed by code. But maybe because it is not too long, or because this is classified as a trailer it is okay. I was just wondering. I hope someone who knows the code book can clarify this for me.

Technically there isn’t really a “tiny house code,” so that’s why you see things like stairs with no railings — no one is checking because they aren’t really legal in many places…but I always recommend checking safety codes before building just so you and yours are protected!

Am I the only one that thinks these are no different than RV’s and Trailers?
They aren’t tiny. Pretty soon, the norm will be these things lugged around by Semi’s. How about a site for ..build your own RV or Trailer.

My first thoughts. Plus, they are much heavier. I could agree with you more but you can build your own RV. Just use the same plans using balsa wood.
