236 Sq. Ft. Zen Teahouse in Portland

Check out this 236 sq. ft. zen teahouse that can easily be a backyard office or guest retreat.

The owner of the zen teahouse was a internationally known architect, Pietro Belluschi, who was known during his lifetime for designing skyscrapers and churches with steeples in Portland, Oregon.

His son, Anthony Belluschi, has now restored the original 1944 tiny house into what you see below.

Pietro used to use it for reading architect plans, drafting, napping and as a simple getaway in his own back yard.

Inside the zen teahouse you will find three defined sections that are separated by sliding shoji screen doors.

This is to separate the kitchen from the bathroom and living/sleeping area.

Would you make a backyard office like this? Or could you live in a space like this full time?

This would be my ideal tiny house since I lived in Japan for a couple of years and I love this clean, uncluttered look with lots of wood!
Would like to see the bathroom area, too. Beautiful design!!
    Thanks for sharing.

Does it have a combo washer/dryer out of sight? Does it have an induction cooktop instead of a stove? Are there solar panels on the roof in order to go off grid? Does it have a soaking tub? These things I would like to have in this house.

If you read the article, you’ll see that this is a backyard retreat, so there’s no need for laundry facilities or a kitchen. It could certainly be converted if the owner wanted any of the things you mentioned.

Wow, Andrea, thanks for sharing this. Very soothing with all that mellow wood and clean design. The transom-style lighting would be great in an urban area, too, for privacy. Wonderful how something designed in 1944 is still exquisite today.

It’s this exact style of Modern Home that inspired me to become an architect when I was a very, very wee girl. They were SO exotic to a Farm Girl who grew up in an Anne of Green Gables farm house!

This is from an article: “To the right of the hall is a narrow one-sink “kitch-bath,” a word Anthony Belluschi invented to describe his clever combination of a kitchen, bathroom and changing room. One side of the room is a fully stocked kitchen; the other side – without a divider – is the bathroom counter, toilet and shower.” I really-really wish that a photo existed of this feature. 🙁 I’ve searched all the links and came up with nothing; just the posted photos.

Anyway, beautiful & serene home. I’m so glad to know the son saved it from the elements. 😀

      Cahow,
There is a glimpse of the shower stall, I beleive, in the photo of the kitchen units. Its on the right hand edge of the photo showing tiling work.

I also love the clean lines with minimal clutter.
Seems I saw a TV show featuring this architect. Can’t remember which one or the channel.

Makes one calm just looking at it; so lovely. I would very much like to see the floor plans for this gem. Are there any available anywhere ?

I could live in this foundation house with a few changes: I’d need a full bath with soaking tub, and a full kitchen with prep island. I’d also like a place to keep my car in winter.

Great for full time living! The clean minimalist look is so lovely to look at, but then I always want to add color and collectibles . . .one’s personality comes out.

Nothing better than sleek. clean. design. bones.
The compliment being agreeable, neutral interior allowing the bones being simply brilliant.

I so love this — the kitchen alone is so nice — looks like lots of
storage space. How about that cool window in the bdrm?!
If I could expand this to 600 sq. ft. I would be in heaven as long
as I could get plenty of storage!

Ah my heart goes potter patter for this one. I love most how the high windows make the roof float above the house. I love zen when I am not loving the quiet of wabi Sabi more.

As I pay off my 5 acres and pare down… I find there is not much of interest to me in stores. I can’t imagine that I could afford such a jewel, but love to dream.

This is beautiful. I love it. This is exactly the design style that I want to incorporate in my tiny house. I wish we could see a floor plan to get a better idea of the layout.

It is a little too modern-looking on the exterior for my taste. However, it is open, airy, and has clean lines inside, which is quite nice!

I love the combination and always have been a great fan of modern and Asian architecture mixed.. It is a very clean and refreshing design that just makes it so welcoming, I love the sliding shoji screen doors as it is like the icing on a cake, that completes the whole house… I would love to live in a home like this… Beautiful simply beautiful….!
