Historic Late 1800s Cabin on 50 Acres: Restored!

This post contains affiliate links.

This couple was in the process of building their first Airbnb back in 2019 when this stunning late 1800s cabin went on the market in Virginia — complete with 50 acres! After touring the cabin, they fell in love, purchased it, and got it visitor-ready as quickly as possible.

The lovely spot has a fireplace, romantic upstairs bedroom, functional kitchen, and beautifully-curated decor. The 50 acres of surrounding woodlands make it the perfect place to explore and enjoy time in nature. What do you think? The owners tell their acquisition story below!

Cozy & Comfortable Appomattox River Cabin

The Historic Appomattox cabin was originally built by a Dr. Pugh in the late 19th century about 20 miles away from its current location.

His widow had it moved in the 1970’s to be closer to her beau across the river.

She sold it to someone shortly thereafter…early 80’s I think.

The new owners hired a painter and that painter ended up buying it from them in the late 90’s.

And we bought it from that painter in 2020!

My husband and I own a real estate firm and he found the cabin on Zillow in December of 2019 and was instantly drawn to it.

But at that time we were in the process of building another cottage on our land in White Stone, Virginia that was supposed to be our first AirBnb venture.

So I was a little hesitant to purchase the Appomattox cabin while still wrapped up in our first one.

But we made a deal that if the Appomattox cabin was still available on Feb 1 2020, we’d at least go see it.

Well, once we got to the end of the half-mile-long, tree lined driveway, we were in love.

We bought the cabin, took a couple months to furnish and design it the way we wanted and then we popped it on AirBnb!

So the historic Appomattox cabin ended up being our first adventure into the world of AirBnb and it has truly been amazing.

Fast forward a couple years and that original cottage we were building is now finally up and ready to join its Appomattox sister on AirBnb!

Description:

Nestled amongst a stand of mature hardwood trees, atop a bluff overlooking the scenic Appomattox River, this cozy cabin is a great place to let your stress melt away. Originally built in the 1800’s and moved to its current location in the 1970’s, it offers old-school charm and modern comfort.

The cabin is a half-mile from the road, and surrounded by beautiful, old trees. All windows have screens, so it’s easy to open them and listen to the birds, breeze, and the river. While everything is set up for a comfortable and easy stay, there are a few things to remember: The stairs are as old as they are beautiful, they’re steep and have shallow treads. Be careful, take it slow, and you’ll be fine! Our 50 acres sit in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and there are some steep inclines on the trails. Like the stairs, take it slow and you’ll be fine! Your children are most welcome to join you! We checked “Not Suitable” due to the stairs being open from the bedroom with no door or means to prevent access.

Totally agree. I feel they should have done the interior romantic and of the era the cabin was built. So dislike the modern they’ve done. Not welcoming at all.

I agree. What a shame to do that to the inside. And no wonder prices are so high.

Stunningly Beautiful cabin but totally disappointed to see all the modern furnishings. It totally took away from the cozy cabin feeling one would expect in an old cabin. Primitive decor would have made the cabin much more homey & suiting the surroundings around the old cabin.

I don’t know what the point was supposed to be by showing a picture of books or someone pouring alcohol. Not impressed with the interior.

It’s an AirBNB, so it’s showing what you have access to when you’re staying there…

I love it. Quirky exterior and super nice interior. Obviously the first three commentators don’t agree. But that’s ok, everybody’s different.

I like the interior and the exterior. I love the fact that the cabin is located on fifty acres. I feel like it would be a peaceful retreat.

Love it! The best thing is to own 50 acres plus a historic cabin 😀
