Finally a tiny one I could love. Love that red stove! Well done guys. Recycled very well. Is there no porta potty/shower? To hefty a price for me, tho.

No fridge? I was very happy to see the oven/stove, but no fridge?

I would be proud to have this quaint, little abode. And there are MANY inexpensive ways to add a potty and shower to an off-grid structure. And if I designed and built this unique place, I’d probably expect the same compensation in return. However, $30k gave me “sticker shock”. What does that translate to in price per square foot?

That works out to $333.33 a sq ft, based on 12 x 7.5 as described. While it is cute and actually pretty useable, no shower/bath and no fridge, uber-tiny..,? I might see it being worth 1/3 – 1/2 of this price… If you are handy at all can probably build it yourself on a used trailer for about $5 – 6K.

A bit higher, looks aside it has a R-21 via 3 inches of closed cell spray foam with brand new custom double pane windows and 1/4″ Birch Plywood covered in epoxy coating and Tyvek over a 2×4 framing… Plus everything was custom built by hand…

They basically designed this so they could winter in it in places like Montana, Utah, etc…

Appearances can often be deceiving when judging costs because things that effect durability, long term resistance to the elements, and energy efficiency are usually not things you can know by just looking at the finished house, and are separate costs from the basic structure of the house.

Not to say this is worth the full asking price but you have to consider more than a basic structure for an equivalent build…

I love this! It is pretty, well organized, and homey. Every detail has been carefully thought out. Great job.

If you consider the cost of the materials and time spent building it, I don’t think $30k is unreasonable. Also most people who have ever purchased a big-ticket item know (I hope), the starting price is negotiable.

Also if you’re going to be hauling water, better to keep the container in the truck where it will introduce less instability to the load. It would be really easy to add a shower head to the outside and just pump it through from the truck bed. For its size, I think I’d rather keep the living space that’s there and use coolers/water storage/generator from the truck bed. Don’t forget that for a fridge and water pump you need power and probably more than you’d get from roof-top solar if using it every day.

In my design that I hope to eventually build, the shower head will be installed below the roof over the open 4’ section of patio in the rear, with the floor being expanded steel. Some bamboo blinds and you’ve got privacy, and that “free” feeing that showering outdoors gives you 🙂

yes, i would need a bathroom (maybe a tiny tow-behind?)
kidding aside, there are some really well thought-out creative space solutions in this design.
*the counter that extends past the dining bench also serves as storage and a step up to the bed, for the agile youth.
*the lowered loft area over the dining gives headroom to the loft without unduly affecting the seating.
*beautifully reuse of old dresser for storage on platform base (more storage?)
the rest is simply aesthetics, which can be solved with some simple finishes, paint, flooring, light fixtures (and solar pv?).
